If in-character attempts fail, try it out of character. That is, talk to
the players, not their characters. Instead of starting to play at the next
game session, ask them why they do what they do with their characters --
the idea is to try to find out if they are acting dumb because they are
out to get into as much trouble as they can, or because they haven't even
realized that?
