Sorry, I have to disagree with your disagreement. I remember reading about
a new type of battery that is being developed (and this was several years ago.)
Basically, they've discovered a polymer that can hold an electric charge
nearly as well as metal. But since it's basically a plastic, there's no
heavy lead plates, and no acid needed. The thing also can be discharged
and recharged several hundred times with now degredation. It weighs 1/100th
that of a typical car battery (this is off the top of my head and could be
grossly inaccurate).
And since they've nearly gotten cars that can run effectively on traditional
batteries, in sixty years when high performance electric engines are combined
with "plastic" batteries, I would think gas engines would be rare in cars
for anything but the most intensive applications.
