Subject: ATTENTION: Vorlon again under threat of termination
Date: Wed, 17 Aug 1994 17:37:33 +0100
At 1:30 this afternoon, the acting chair of hte computer science
department cornered me in the hallway and ordered my to shut down vorlon
immediately. He implied that it was under the order of the security (but
refused to tell who gave that order) department on campus, but contacting
security has said that they gave no such order. This person also cited
persons in computer services gave this order but once again refused to
give the name of the person who gave that order.

With the help of the student senate, I have been able to get a temorary
restraining order implemented that will give me until Friday at 4:00pm to
sort out the situation. Unfortunately, the director of academic computing
is gone on vacation and is unable to confirm that permission to keep the
machine up was given, although the student senate president will be able
to confirm that.

In any case, this message is being sent to all of the mailing lists and
people that will be affected by this machine so that if it does disappear
in less than 48 hours, it will not come as a surprise.

All information WILL be properly backed up on to tape and archived, but
that isn't really the point.

{This is mostly addressed to the mailing lists being run from this
machine}

In the meantime, I would like to take a moment to solicit testomonials
from everyone that has a stake in the continued existence of the vorlon
computer. If you can take a few minutes, please jot off an email to mee
addressed to "To whom it may concern" explaining that there is legitimate
academic reasons for the computer to remain on line and how its withdrawl
will effect you.

I am concerned that this pressure is being brought to shut down the
machine in part because of the gay/lesbian/bisexual mailing lists that
are being run on it. It is impossible to get that verification, but I
have a feeling. So mentioning that having queer-related lists running on
the machine is a "good thing" would probably be helpful as well, as give
me additional ammunition here at P.C. University.

Please please please send in your support.

Thanks.
