Some people, general anti-internet people, decided that vorlon
was a "security risk", in the sense that it could run things that could
be really bad.

They proceeded to shut it down without letting FL get to the stuff
for several days. In other words, they confiscated his machine.

FL thinks it was illegal. Probably was. I think a lawsuit might
help with a precedent...

Unfortunately, I don't think a lawsuit with a decent chance of winning
could ever be launched given what's known.

They told him it was a "security" matter. Even if someone ordered the
disconnection because he didn't appreciate the fact homosexual-topic lists
were being run from it (and, IMHO, that's exactly why), that someone
wasn't stupid enuff to make that known (like that high school principal
down south that tried to ban this past year's prom because he wanted to
try to stamp out "interracial couples" from attending).

The school, as most, if not all do, has the right to do what they want
with their ports. If they want you off, and they haven't shown extreme
prejudice or bigotry in their position, then you're SOL. FL was
successfully shafted by someone, but seems to be getting back on top, if
not higher.

Bet that "someone" isn't exactly laughing anymore...

Rasputin the Doom-ed Out

PS- (non-SR) I have a Compaq Presario 800 CDS with an internal 14.4/14.4
modem, but I can't seem to hit on the right initialization string to play
Doom over a modem serial link. Can anyone help? The code for a generic
14.4 doesn't work, and the manual doesn't list a manufacturer. Thanks in
advance...

As I understand, this is only partially correct. The school is providing
a service to its customers (the students) and is an agent of the State
(Minnesota). Therefore, arbitrary restrictions on resources can violate
the student<->university "contract" that is in force for admitted
students (there is a supreme court case about this). In addition, the
mission statement of the university requires equal and maximal access to
ALL students.

Unfortunately, I lack the FUNDS to institute a court case.

As I said, maybe we should try to get a good precedent out of this
one. There have to be some organizations to help fund this if need be...

Doesn't the EFF do that kind of thing?

Aye, there's the rub.

". . . with liberty and justice for all (who possess the funds to pursue it)"

Still and even so, even were you to have contemporary access to such
resources as such an endeavor would dictate, there is the temporal element
of the American judiciary to consider: In all probability, were you to
engage in such an enterprise, it would prove to be of such prodigious
duration that you probably have would have long since gradated by the
time in which judgment was delivered. The regrettable consequence being
that it would be of little service to you personally ... tho' there is the
principle to consider.

You bet. Consider it, and it will only take a few seconds.

You're right, they're wrong.

The only satisfaction that counts is that which you count yourself.
You don't need two or three years and a chance that a guy in a black robe
will make all the thousands you spent worth it in telling you what you
already know. One
way or another, you'll be back on top. It may be a different hill, but
you'll be king again.

(clap clap clap)

here here.

i am in complete agreement with the holy Entombed. let it go. you're
in the right, they're most likely in the wrong. but you have to
measure it by the amount of "good" that will be done by the time all
this is over. if you get involved in a draw-out legal battle, that's
hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars you won't have to spend
running a new list or furthering your political views, or playing
shadowrun, or just sleeping in late.

fight the BIG battles. leave the small one for experience.
