RE> Chicago questions and Cleveland answers...
10/10/96
To Net Enhancements for Roleplaying Shadowrun<NERPS@********.itribe.net>

According to the CalFree Sourcebook, at least the
entertainment corps (Truman for example) went to CalFree.

The big question that you will have to answer is why the
corps would relocate to Cleveland, and not to another part
of Chicago, or another nearby city. Big tax breaks? Free
land? Distribution centers in place? Why?

Don't get me wrong, I'm _not_ trying to slam your idea.
However, the move for the corps does need to be clearly
justified, not just "Oh, the bugs took over Chi-town, they
had to go somewhere," because that just doesn't work. Why?
Because a lot of Chicago is outside of Bug City. And with
distribution centers and qualified employees already in the
Chicago metro area, why move too far away? Clearly, some,
like the simsense corps, saw no other option than leave
Chicago and go to Hollywood. But not all of them.

Again, I repeat, I'm _not_ trying to slam your idea, just
give you some constructive feedback so that what you write
makes sense in the SR game world.

Hoi chummers... Just a few questions for ya...

Now, I wanted to get some ideas from ya'll before I get to
work and see what
I have that'll need modified...

The way I see it, when Chicago fell to teh bugs, most of the
major corps
(and a few of teh smaller) lost their center of power in the
mid-east UCAS.
they had to go somewhere... They lost a lot of assets, but
many of the
corps managed to get some of their staff, equipment, and
whatnot out of the
CZ before it was sealed off... In fact, it certainly seemed
taht some of
them knew what was coming.

In our game, our characters were based in Chicago, and then
managed t get
out about a year after Bug City hit. We've since moved the
game to
Cleveland (where we live), and have started working up stats
and stuff for
the city, hence my volunteering to do it.

Now, in our game, we've moved the corps, shipping industry,
and everything
to Cleveland, since it's the next largest city in the Mid
West, and also has
access to the Great Lakes. This has revitalized what was a
very lagging city.

I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on this, regardless if
you know the
area or not... How do you feel about the Corps moving like
that? Does it
make sense? What, if anything (or everything), do you think
needs changed...?

Thanks aghead of time for the input...:)

Right, I got that already, but thanks for the info...:)

A combination of cheap land and buildings (the cuty had begun to drag again)
as well as a reaction to the bugs. I know that there's a lot outside the CZ
left of Chicago, but most of that has turned into an armed camp between the
UCAS, Ares, and everyone else that's helping fight the bugs... At least in
our game world it's like this... Plus, seems to me that most norms, once
they found out just what was going on (and even before) would want to get as
far away from the city of chicago as possible. Sure the likely hood of a
few bugs getting out, or, with the UCAS news blackout and propaganda, the
threat of the "virus" getting out isn't TOO likely, but still the threat
remains and most people will panic... And the corps lost a lot of Buldings
and Property to the CZ... I can think of at least 3 HQ building that were
in teh CZ...

Panic does some weird stuff to people, and I'll try to cover most of the
basic explanation for the move in the intro to the section. Does any of
what I wrote make sense? Seems like when I get going I sytart to ramble a
bit...:)

Also, as to why they would head to Cleveland, It's about the next largest
city in that area. It has a good port with Lake Erie being right there,
that gives it access to the great lakes, the Mississippi river, Hudson Bay,
etc. Plus, as I said, the economy of Cleveland was sagging again (it seems
to do that in RL every 50-75 years, and seeing as how it's picked up again
in the last five, by 205X, it should have slowed down again), and I can see
the city officials offering huge tax breaks and such for the industry to
move in...

Of course, the Corps will prob want to keep *some* presence in Chicago,
working to aid defence and supply distribution. this lends itself to good
pubicity. But I don't think they'd take the chance of losing anymore major
assets...

Well, That's just my view of Chicago, though...:)

Not taken as such... This is precisely the type of material I want to hear,
because this forces me to think about things, and make sure that my
reasoning is sound. As a native of the city, I may take certain things for
granted. Also, I may miss things that others might see... I appreciate
your input, Erik...:) Thanx...
