Subject: Magic & Bioware

We all know that installing Cyberware decreases Essence...
And that the Magic rating is the Essence rounded down.
For sam types the max cyberware you could put in was 5.9999999
(of course mages would keep it a lot higher).

Then along came Bioware,
Which you add up to a Body Index.
The max Body Index is you BOD attribute,
so a beefed up sam could have 6 points cyber and 6 points bio.

Now, Bioware is not a freebie for mages, because it is "unnatural"
it also reduces your Magic rating...

For sams, etc cyber & bio are not cumulative (ie 6 points each,
not a total of 6).

What my question is, is what is the opion in relation to the
Magic attribute. It is not clearly spelled out anywhere, and
it could probably be interpreted both ways - but is the
Magic loss due to Cyberware and Bioware cumulative, or
do you only apply the highest?

eg. If you have 2 points of Cyberware only your Essence = 4,
Therefore Magic = 4

If you have 1 point of Bioware only, your Body Index = 1,
Therefore Magic = 5.

Now, if you have both 2 points of Cyber and 1 point of Bio,
your Essence is 4, and your BI = 1,
So does that mean your Magic = 3 (both Cyber & Bio are cumulative),

OR Is Magic = 4 (which can be thought of as Bio REDUCES Magic,
whereas Cyber sets a limit,
therefore your Magic = 6 - BI = 6-1 = 5, but with a max of Ess = 4,
giving total Magic = 4)

Also the reverse (1 point Cyber, 2 points Bio
gives Essence 5, and Body Index 2,
Magic = 6 - Body Index = 4, with a max of Ess = 5, ie Magic = 4

OR

Magic = 3 (-2 for Bio, -1 for Cyber).

I suppose the question comes down to:
Is the formula
Magic = Essence - Body Index, OR
Magic = MIN (6 - Body Index, Essence) [MIN= the smaller of]

Well - What does everyone else think??

On a related question: there are different versions of most Increase
Attribute spells - one for natural attributes, and a more difficult
one for cybered attributes.

Are Phys Adepts stat increases cumulative with spells - ie can they
be boosted further (both are magic). Does this apply for
Reaction/Initiative increases as well?

(related to above) Which version of the spell affects Bioware? The
normal one or the Cyber one (neither really seems 100%)?

If it is the normal version, does that mean you can use Bio + Magic
Spells to both boost initiative? [note that a lot of Bio + Cyber
enhancements don't work together]

Oh well, they were just a few of the rules questions that have been
bugging me for ages, and I finally got around to asking them.

I am really interested in what everyone else thinks.

Chummer, of course it's [Magic = 6 - (Body Index + Essence Loss)].
A mage shouldn't be a sammy.

I think so, too. Otherwise the game would become heavily un-balanced.

That's correct.

However, please read the FAQ. This mailing list isn't for this sort of
discussion, that's what ShadowRN is for. This list is about the
"publishing" of NERPS net.books. RN is a rules discussion forum. Please
take your question there.

Thanks, and welcome to the Shadowrun mailing lists! There's a lot to do,
so check out the FAQ and see what catches your interest.

First, this is not the correct list for this. Try ShadowRN instead.

Second (and I'm surprised most people have answered this incorrectly) is
that neither of these is correct. Body Index does not effect magic rating
directly; however, magicially active characters must pay Essence
_as_well_as_ Body Index to install bioware (Shadowtech, pg. 5). Thus, Magic
Rating is equal to Essence, rounded down, plus any Initiation grade.

If you think that's amazing, try this:

Date sent: Sun, 23 Dec 2012 16:52:33 +0100
Send reply to: Net Enhancements for Roleplaying
Shadowrun

From: Predator Omega <ba1764@*******.BAYNET.DE>

Sent some time ago, but I have no idea why because I've set my
mailer to sort by date (from low to high) so this always appears
at the end...

Ok, you got me, I'm a maighty, omnipoten, all-knowing, supernatural
time-traveller form the future and trying to confuse all people in the
past with the intention to destroy the world and make them all mad
(har, har <evil, diabolic, sadistic grin>).

No, it's just a simple chrash of win95, and sometimes this seems to
change the internal clock. I usually notice this early enough to correct
it, but sometimes e-mails like this happen. So don't wonder,
and a happy new subscription.

P.s. going to post some cyberware for whatever project we're currently
working at. In fact I can't remeber anything else than the guide to the
world. Wasn't there something like 'NERPS Stuff' ?????
