Here's a brief timeline for what I see happening to Guam. Any
responses would be more than welcome, as well as suggestions for more
stuff, as it is kind of skimpy right now. I would REALLY enjoy comments
from the Australia team.

___________________
7 March 1521 - Magellan et al land on Guam. First Europeans to do so.

1662 - First Spanish colony established, begins 300 years of Spanish rule.
The Chamorro culture is radically altered by the Spanish Jesuits. Latte
stone dwellings are abandoned. Filipinos gain a large presence on Guam.

1898 - US takes Guam during the Spanish-American war. Under Naval
Government until 1941

1917 - first shot fired by us military in WWI fired as warning on Guam.

1941 - Japan invades and conquers Guam. Rule of Terror* lasts until 1944

21 July 1944 - US invades and eventually retakes Guam. Due to free food by
rationing, and the utter decimation of other food sources due to the war,
both Spam and Tabasco sauce become highly popular, and Guam leads the
world in per capita Tabasco consumption. Naval Government reinstated

21 July 1950 - Organic Act goes into effect, enabling civil gov't of Guam
and congressional US citizenship for Guamanians

1960's-1970's - Rise of the "Brown Power" movement to safeguard and retain
elements of traditional Guamanian society as well as a small desire to rid
Guam of US military presence. Movement however is not marred by the
violence common to other such movements

1968 - Some constituional protections given to Guamanians as well as
locally elected governors

1987 - Governor Joseph Ada sworn in. He redirects Guam's Commonwealth
movement towards independence rather than toward Statehood status in the
US. Lots of rhetoric about maintaining the Chamorro culture.

1990 - Former Gov. Ricky Bordallo commits suicide in front of a statue of
Chamorro chief Quipuha

2010 - American Military presence in Japan and Okinawa non-existent. Units
have either been reassigned to Guam or outright recalled from the pacific
theater. Under pressure to maintain a viable presence near Japan, the US
negotiates Commonwealth status for Guam. A decline in Japanese tourism
begins as Guamanians look with increased fear and loathing toward an
Imperial Japan.

24 Dec 2011 - At the same time as the sighting of Ryumyo and Daniel
Coleman's escape, several groups of latte stones appear in jungle
clearings. All are associated with increased sightings of Taotamona (sp?)
spirits.

ca. early 21st century - An unusually high number of Guamanians are
affected by UGE, almost all expressing as Trolls or Dwarves. Orks and
Elves are almost non-existent. Scientists link this with lytico-bodig
disease, which symptomatically resembles both Parkinson's and ALS.
Explaining why this is so frustrates all attempts. VITAS only lightly hits
Guam.

2020 - the Japanese Imperial Marines take Saipan and Tinian. Rota
disappears beneath the waves, seeming to just sink through all
surveillance devices. Japan expels all metahumans from the Islands.
Refugees go to Guam. Hatred for the Japanese Imperial State grows
immensely. Japanese tourists not under severe corp/muscle protection are
hassled unmercifully.

2031 - Taking advantage of the confusion caused by the formation of UCAS,
Guam wrangles a deal for independence from the UCAS in return for lower
rents on the military land. Commanwealth Governor Carlotta Leon-Guerrero
leads the transformation of the government into a republic, with a
unicameral legislature and judicial/executive branches patterned after the
US. To make up for the lost revenue, President Leon-Guerrero accepts Ares
Macrotechnology's extremely generous "endowment to the University of Guam"
in return for exclusive marine research rights in the Guam area.

2054 - A Free Spirit of Man appears in front of the still standing statue
of Quipuha. It claims to be Ricky Bordallo, and appears to have an
extensive knowledge of Bordallo's life.

*This name seems problematic for me, since it accurately describes the
Japanese rule, but comes loaded with quite a bit of emotional baggage. Any
suggestions for another name?

It all sounds pretty good, so far.... one comment to make, though;

According to what I remember of the SR world history, the UCAS and CAS no
longer have ANY external military assets.... I take it that includes Guam.

Don't ask me for a sourcebook quote; I'm writing from memory. GO look it
up yourself if you're interested.

I've got into a flame war before( on the ShadowRN list) about how much power
nations actually have in the SR universe.... But keep in mind that the
Makah (NAN tribe) own a fully/partially functional Nuclear Sub base,
courtesy of the treaty agreement.... If the UCAS couldn't hold a sub
base on their own continent, how can they hold an external territory?

Perhaps the military bases should have been bought out by one or more of
the non-Japanese corporations. Ares and Seadder Krupp for example.
