I'm trying to type this paragraph with only once space. It's not that
hard.. I just have to add an extra backspace after each period. I've never
really noted any difference between the two styles -- I always use two
spaces, as I learned to type on a typewriter. Does anyone else notice a
difference? (Besides Wordman?:)

Despite my computer experience, I too learned on a typewriter, and, while
I tend to do most everything to make it look good on the computer, I
still add two spaces after the peried. Maybe it is just a built in thing,
but I don't know that it makes too much of a difference. In mail,
actually, since it is a fixed width font (although the system that you
view it with can change that) you should use the spaces, since it is the
same situation as with the typewriter.

There are some fonts that I have noticed account for the spacing well, and
with them it is quite obvious that you need only one space after
sentences. Ah well, that's my say.

I started using 2 spaces about a year ago (they didn't teach that
when I was in school). Even with modern word processors and modern
typefaces I prefer to use 2 spaces after periods. And I especially
prefer it when it comes to ascii text and email. Just my two cents :)

Take something like a Shadowrun book. 2 columns of text at 9 or 10 points.
Make one column with two-spaces and the other with one. In this case (which
I use a lot q.v. Combined NAGEE, etc.) it makes a huge difference,
especially if you use justified text.

More of a page-layout thing than an essay thing, I suppose.

I've run into similar situations where what I had had one space after
the period and I wanted two. First I did a find and replace to
change all of the exising two space periods to one space periods.
Then I did a find and replace to change them all to two space
periods. Then its a matter of going through the document and fixing
periods for abbreviations and the like (of which there aren't very
many, so it goes quickly).

No, but my email proggy is displaying in Courier, so it *looks* like a
typewriter.

Must admit, the two-spaces-after-a-period thing is a pet peeve of mine.
It's American only (Australians aren't taught to type like that) and is
a silly holdover from the days of typewriters. Plus it looks ugly, like
Wordman pointed out, and plays merry hell with intricate formatting (or
even simple realignment during word wrapping).

Actually, my computer studies teacher (who was Welsh) *tried* to teach me
to use two spaces after a period. Mind you, she also taught me that

(1) Interactive programs communicate in English with the user
(2) High level languages are the most like English
(3) Therefore, all interactive programs are written in high level
languages.

I'm not kidding. This woman was paid by the taxpayers to tach small
children how to use IT.

I'm not sure whether to fear her or despise her.

I never had any typing lessons, but I also never saw anyone use double
spaces until I got internet access.

When editing any NERPS or PW book, I replace ALL double spaces by a single
one. A simple replace " " by " " does the trick, and I find it looks
much
better. However, this looks like it's a case where what you've been taught
to use looks best to you, so let's end this discussion, okay?
