I had an idea of some stuff to do with the net, but I had to drop it because
of RW problems. Is there any interest in this?

New Expansion for the Matrix
Last updated 3/2/96
Darrin Conant
dconant@*******.net

The purpose of this is to expand the rules regarding the matrix as well as
our knowledge of what exists within it. I'm starting a preliminary outline
for areas that could use expanding to insure that there is some internal
consistency. I haven't come up with any specific rules yet, so don't ask
for them. While this isn't a NERPS project (yet?) I hope others will feel
free to help me work on this for everyone's benefit. I would also like to
say that I do not own every product available for SRII, so I apologise
for my ignorance in some areas.

Please feel free to tell me a section is stupid/unbalancing/missing and why.

I. Purpose
A) to expand the matrix
B) include some "culture" (BBS', games, entertainment, simsense)
with a slant on their usefullness to runners
C) allow other non-deckers to have a use for the matrix

II. Culture
A) Simsense
1) could simsense be used to implant an effect similar to
psychotropic IC? Any good ideas?
2) any other uses?
B) General Information
1)what proportion of info in the matrix is corporate/educational/
personal? (I'm assuming that there exists an internet similar to what
exists today)
a) What proportion of the information is incorrect?
b) Danger of out of date information (and likelihood)
2) research using the matrix (emphasis on personal data/history/
building plans etc. using newspapers and such)
a) The rules in the basic book (pg. 202) can use expansion.
b) Expand the information table to include TN's for:
i) building plans (mostly out of date)
ii) information on your Johnson/target (sometimes
just knowing what corp they are from is usefull)
iii) postings by other runners about target locale
(again out of date)
3) Contacts on the matrix
4) Fixers on the matrix
a) rules for mail order hardware
5) When the corps try to infiltrate the system
a) a nice reversal to the normal run with runners on defense
b) allows GM to steal player's ideas :)
C) The media
D) A bit more info on hacking onto a corps computer to "order" new stuff
(started
in VR 2.0)

III. Expansion to existing matrix rules
A) Improved hitcher jacks that give an enhanced hitcher (EH) limited control
over frames.
1) This will allow a hitcher to make general decisions
regarding the actions of a frame (dumb frames mostly).
a) Should be part of a deck. (not overly expensive)
b) Reduce decker's hacking pool by 1 for every enhanced
hitcher?
c) slow down decker's initiative (how much? 2 per EH?)
d) should hitchers get response increase? (I say no)
e) dumb frame DINAB (doesn't degrade, smaller size)?
f) maybe a relation between DINAB and hacking pool?
(DINAB represents prewritten code, and EH's hacking pool
allows them to make it into programs on the fly, thus
EH's hacking pool can be
1) half normal
2) smaller of hacking and DINAB
3) average of hacking, DINAB
4) nothing
(I'll have to test these options and look for abuses)
2) Hopefully this will provide a non-decker a chance to help
out in the matrix without removing the importance of a true
decker.

First of all, FASA knows these lists are here. Second, they don't monitor
them. Third, they could care less what we do, as long as we tag that
requisite disclaimer in front of everything.

And doing a Guide to the World would be a huge project. Way too huge. Be
far better off selecting a piece of the world and writing it up, like maybe
Western Europe or something (what are those damn frogs, I mean Frenchmen,
doing?).

And as far as the Matrix expansion goes, it sounds like an excellent idea.
Each section wouldn't have to be long, but all together, it could be large
enough to be a stand alone NERPS book.

I still think we should finish up the old projects first though. Or at least
think of a way to integrate them with newer ideas.

I agree with that. Of all the NERPS stuff, The Shadow of the mind project
is the most interesting one to me at least. It would be a shame if it never
got finished. Problem is though no one seems to know how far it has gotten
after the archived stuff that was on Hayden or JD Falk's SR pages (what is
with their sites anyway?) or nobody won't tell. (I'm pretty much a newbie)

Lets start with, what are the "old projects"? A general purpose/goal of the
"book" is what I'm looking for.

(I guess this is directed to Gurth or another knowledgeable person)

I have SotM on my HD (not on my page), and it needs a LOT of work to
resemble anything like a full book. I personally don't think it's worth
the trouble, seeing how FASA explains psionics etc. in Awakenings.

BTW, Hayden and J.D.'s pages are listed in the ShadowRN FAQ.

ten days max and things seem to start moving again. Or is saying this
tempting fate? :)

Nobody's kicked down my door yet *crosses fingers :)*

The world would be too big a place to write a book about, yes. Western
Europe might be a better bet, seeing that there is supposed to be an
Australia sourcebook out next year but no more European books are planned
(AFAIK).

With this the main problem is that there's maybe a quarter of a book in
the stuff we currently have for Underworld. We should try to fit it in
with whatever next project we intend to do -- suggestions welcomed :)

I should know, I guess, since I'm the Project Leader here (no matter how
much Paolo tried to run this show a few weeks back :)
Anyway, the "old projects" probably refers to Shadows of the Mind, which
is a *very* old project (it was started two years or so, I would guess,
but I was only on ShadowRN back then so I can't be sure).

The other is Underworld, which is to be a street-level sourcebook, dealing
with fixers, gangs, cops, and all the other stuff on the down-and-dirty
side of shadowrunning, as opposed to high-and-mighty magic, corps,
governments, etc.
However, Underworld has fallen dead, it would seem. Only about a quarter
of the people who said they were going to write something, actually wrote
something.
