Could I get some comments and reactions on this before I go any further?

Bioware

BI Avail Street Cost
Body Thorns . 9 5/72hrs . 75 7,000K

Body Thorns are almost exactly what they describe: after the initial
five treatments, small buds appear just subdermally, and over a period
of several weeks, the buds push up and out of the skin in a very painful
manner, ultimately resulting in the entire body being covered in thorns.
These thorns continue to be painful for as long as the host lives, as
the thorns regenerate themselves if broken. Some bearers of the thorns
become used to the pain over time, but no sure way of preventing the
pain exists without resorting to a pain editor. (Does not come with
purchase.)

Game Effects
The thorns impart a +1 impact armor upon the user, and when in close
melee combat (grappled, punching) inflicts 5M damage upon the opponent.
The thorns also induce a permanent light mental wound upon the user.
However, after having had the thorns for a few months, the user may pay
5 Karma to “learn” the physical adept power of pain resistance at the
light wound level.

but I don’t recall any such fashion trend. Can someone lend me a clue?

One would think there's also some sort of charisma penalty, plus a +x to
doing anything with your hands or feet (thorns out of 'em)? Perhaps you
should narrow down "the entire body" to the torso + arms and legs, but not
hands and feet?

(>) Uh. I had a sammie friend who got the prototype- generation three, I
think. It was before they got the thorns of the palms and finger bottoms,
but after they got it so you wouldn't get them on your feet. It was hell for
him. Killed himself a week later.

Wouldn't this shred clothing?? Even an Armor Jacket would get messed
up,
and I don't feel like walking around in Security or Heavy Armor
everywhere
I go. If clothes aren't ruined, then how do the thorns add to grappling
damage through my armor?

How about instead of learning a phys-ad power, just make it a Body Test?
Like Body (4), 6 Months -1 Month per success?

How does the whole thing compare to Forearm Guards? FG are almost
undetectable, same armor, and usually higher damage; all for less nuyen,
and no Essense or Body Index.

<snip description of the bioware>

Why on earth would anyone get this? I can't even think of a good reason
for the bad guys to do this to someone they don't like.
