Actually, I ran a breif section of our campaign like this.
My runners (fools that they are) VOLUNTEERED to help Renraku with a
terrorist situation in the basements of the Arcology in Seattle.
Unbeknowst to them they were all gassed at the meet and connected to new
Ultra-real VR simrigs.
They spent nearly one month connected to these machines, while their
meat bodies were tended by machines. :-)

It was quite a shock when one of the PC's died on a very tough run, only
to awake strapped to a hospital gurney!
