Mailing List Logs for ShadowRN

From: Unknown sender
Subject: None

Well, I am pretty new to SR, and am doing a lot of reading on the net to
get to know the world. However, aside from a couple of runs on IRC, I
have yet to play a game (I'm working on joining a group), and so I don't
feel comfortable enough to actually write anything.

You did mention locations, and I might get to work writing some things up
on Montana...hmmm, I just noticed that it is Souix nation, there's some
interesting possibilities there (I don't think that all the people with
underground fortresses and weapon stockpiles larger than most 3rd world
nations are just going to say "Here, have fun with it.").

Or maybe they will. I'll think on it.

Yes, we're still slowly working on it.
The basic city source material is done IMO, just needs polishing.
The tough part is the GM materials - ie. Characters, etc.

You can still count me in for sure, and I'd assume Bull as well.

Probably an excellent idea!
Ideas for topics? Hmmm ...
"How to be an Evil GM for fun and Profit!" ;-)

I wouldn't mind a series of supplements along the lines of "Two Dozen of
the World's Coolest Samurai", followed by "Two Dozen of the World's Coolest
Magi", etc., etc.
But I guess that's your whole "No people" thing isn't it?

What about something called "Tell it to them Straight?"
Maybe a book of descriptive phrases and ideas that make starting a run more
interesting than "You all meet in a bar and are hired by Mr. Johnson ..."
Booooorrrring!!!

Give like 101 different ways to start a run that aren't cliche.

BTW - Has anyone seen something called a "Random Cyberpunk Atmosphere
Generator?"
It's basically a chart listing hundereds of visual elements runners might
see in the sprawl - helps flesh out the streets a bit.
I got it from the Scrawls from the Sprawls APA about 5 years ago, and have
never seen it printed on the net anywhere.
I could write it up for an article, and give credit to the original author,
who I sadly no longer no how to contect.

Hey, Kenson recyled stuff from SftS for Awakenings, and FASA "stole" my
eyeball/datajack for Cybertechnology! ;-) Why not get some more mileage out
of this puppy?!

Understandable; IMHO you'd do best to get some hands-on experience before
trying to come up with an article for the game (although I must confess
that's never stopped me :)

Well, most of the Anglos (had to) move(d) out of the newly-formed NAN in
the early 21st century, and I assume any country that wants to make sure
they do would check on survivalist lunatics first of all -- and make sure
those damn well leave first of all :)

Locations like these would be for the NAGTTW (Neo-Anarchists' Guide To The
World), though, and not for the intermission. If you want to write up an
article like this, be my guest.

Foundations and Edge Runners already give plenty of people for GMs to
populate their worlds with, so I would prefer not to do another book about
this.

That wasn't the idea; my intention is to make this a quick project that
can be easily finished in a few months, simply because it shouldn't take
long to write an article for anyone who wants to. The NAGTTW gets bogged
down because you tend to spend months writing and tinkering with your
article until it's exactly right; OTOH you can quickly write up a little
article about, say, toasters in SR.

Not to mention it would give us something to channel over to Shadowland...

I must say that I like this idea myself too, although with a few
reservations: there are weapons enough in SR so these'd have to be
something special IMHO. As for vehicles, well, the RBB2 is due out in a
few months and we have no idea what it will do to vehicle stats -- for all
we know, it'll totally overhaul the whole vehicle stats and make RBB1
vehicles incompatible with RBB2 rules, requiring us to re-write the
ones we came up with a little while after the book comes out... Not that
I'm saying it'll do this, mind you, but there's a distinct possibility.

Although I'd love to see a book like that, it's not quite something that's
easy for everyone to participate in (did I mention that?) nor fast to
write.

Like I said, Edge Runners and Foundations (not to mention Prime Runners by
FASA) already has lots of people described and/or given stats for.

> Generator?"

This would be a useful thing to have for any GM; if it turns out that it
won't fit in with the proposed new book, it would fit very well into the
GM section of the NAGTTW.

Actually I rather like this idea. There are probably enough guns and other
weaponry floating around the web to give me new hardware for my player's
opponents until the magic REALLY comes back - but the sort of material you're
talking about here is pretty sparse.

I've had players ask me about things that the FASA books (and most net
material) just don't seem to think about, such as clothing and fashion trends
by geographical region, how much their power bill is, and what the latest
virtual video game was. Since it looks like that's the sort of thing you're
talking about, I'm 100% for the idea.

NERPS comes out of hibernation again!

This reminds me, Shadowlore 2 ???...... :)

You also mentioned Shadowland. I have yet to see a single suggested
submission on the list for the NERPS column in Shadowland. [the one
thing i have up my sleeve (you have seen Gruth) is not exactly the
best subject matter, if those who have seen the file (about 6 of you
i think, inc Fro) in question want to comment feel free]

......

As to short articles for NAG rest of the world it might help if
folkks want yo write some and if needs be issue in two sections, the
first once about 6 of the articles are finished padded with small
stuff and a later one?
From previous experience this list is pretty good at half writing
things and then when it goes quiet for folks to go away and get on
with the hard work not a lot of progress occurs as nobody ever has
quite as much time again. However when it does work it produces some
of the best net written stuff about. (and all my contributions are
stuck in Shadowlore 2 (inculding Dragons and other paranormal
critters) which is still not complete, any hope yet Gurth?)

I've got (IMHO) a great idea, but I am having a hell of a time
finding any info on it. I want to create an aquology centered on
Troll (currently the worlds largest offshore drilling platform). By
2056-58 the gas field should be dry. And Trolltown just makes a
great name. My problem is that I've only been able to find the basic
stats (weight and dimensions) for Troll. And I'm having a hell of a
time finding information on non-fixed rigs. Does anyone know any
good books or libraries I could check out (I've got pretty much
unlimited internet access).

As soon as I get a handle on the research I'll officially register
for this one.

As I am a legitimate expert on the subject, I'd like
to say that voice recognition in small devices is
much closer the most people think. We could
build that toaster today, except for the fact that I
can't figure out how the bread is going to get into
it.

The strongARM CPU found in the Apple
message pad 2000 has more than enough CPU
power for continuous DICTATION, a much more
difficult task. It just needs more memory.

Voice recognition will be cheap enough for
toasters in about 2007, in my opinion.

I don't think Shadowland would accept it, to be really honest. It's rather
far out, what I've seen of Shadowland (Only 1 issue..) is alot more
'Fanzine', than really innovative stuff.
I really should subscribe and buy the back issues..

Well I'll get to work on re-editing it then.
It's a damn long list, so it will take quite a while.

My personal favorite - One the indoor/barrens/odd details chart - #100 - A

I kid you not! ;-)

Okay, gang, I want to write an article..... I do.

It would be on border security.

All I have is SR2 and Grimmy 2.

Any information on border security you can feed me so I don't
contradict fasa writ?

I have also read "Preying for Keeps" which gave intersting ideas on
getting into the Tir.

Shoot! That must be where I'm screwwing up. (Mental note: no more
spanking) I think shorter articles is a lot more reasonable for me. I
don't want to say that I have been scared off in the past, but it would be
safe to say that I've scared _myself_ off. I start to think about all that
I would want to include in a "complete" article and realize that I don't
have enough time for all of that.

Why i am keeping quiet about the subject of the 'document' being
discussed. There is some pretty unusual stuff in a few of them, the
new guns in a couple of articles are well insane! ok only a couple
are outright game breakers but there is some pretty nasty new kit
including a fully automatic grenade launcher which is every bit as
dangerous in the hands of PC's as you might expect. (not that they
dare get it out very often)
Things like pistols specially designed for troll are more reasonable
however, and quite realistic even if they are terribly bad for game
balance compared to regular ones.

Would help but that costs money :)

Shadowland is not bad and 'Fanzine' sums it up pretty well. I have
found a moderate ammount of good stuff and adventures in issues but
the FASA game balance checking of the new spells/equipment is very
very lax in my opinion there are a few too many items to make the
munchkins drool finding their way into Shadowland mags.

I don't think the article you're talking about is right for sending to
Shadowland, no; for a NERPS book dealing with magic, sure.

I'm not quite sure I follow what you're trying to say here... You mean
allow people to write articles in sections (when they have the time) and
post each sections when it's finished? That's okay by me, although I would
prefer it that at the end, when they're all finished, the author would
repost them all at once.

(For the rest of Mark's points/ideas, see my other reply to his message,
as I wanted to make a separate thread out of this.)

Shadows Of The Mind, ShadowLore II, and DragonLore are currently all
compiled in a single file on my HD, which is nearly finished. It has a
layout that reminds me very much of the way ShadowLore and Foundations
look after Rob Hayden's editing, for nostalgic purposes :)

Now all I really need is a name for it, with which I hope you can all help
out once again. Yes, I know that a great many of you will never even have
heard of the above projects because you joined after they were "finished,"
but neither did I participate in any except DragonLore, so you're not
alone :)

Which as i mentioned in my reply to Fro's message is why i mentioned
it the way i did. Just as some of you know i have the file in
question and have not released it for the SR Suplemental although Fro
has a copy i though i would mention it while commenting we have had
no suggestions whatsoever for the NERPS column in shadowland given
that the file exists [sorry to all those who have no idea what file
i'm talking about but general stuff follows]

No.
We have something like 14 major articles supposedly under way.
When say 7 are compleet issue those plus any small ones people have
done as book one and the latter 7 as book 2 when the remaining
Authors have finished.

here goes again. Of course now the reply to Gurths post that refers

Well i also only got involved in the latter (origonally NEPRS Dragons
and other paranormal creatures) due to when i joined the list!

This does pose the problem of what do some of the sections contain,
'NEPRS guide to the paranormal' or similar would cover a lot of the
stuff but i think a few part finished projects which are incompatible
with that sort of name have been thrown in the mix over the years.

I've had a quick peek (I'm a proofer nyah nyah!:)
Looks pretty smooth, and the filesize is small. I haven't had time to Read
it yet, but I'll try to get it printed today and proof it over the next few
days.

I've read through the old logs, I almost feel like I was there for it..
I like the current title: 'NERPS: Forgotten Treasures'
I realize it's not hugely great for indicating what is inside the book, but
it seems appropriate.

NERPS: Dragons? Psionics? Shadowlore? :)

I was planning on approaching it with the idea of adding "my two

One article I'd love to write would be a description of everything a
pocket secretary can do. Wouldn't be very long. Might include some
one-line descriptions of competing versions.

Some people mentioned that they'd submit more if they could just send in
several ideas about a paragraph and have someone else do the clean-up
work. I'd be more then willing to do cleanup work. I did a bit of it
when compiling the Collected NAGEE (mostly SR2 conversion stuff).

I'm new to the list, but not to the net or SR, so forgive me for lurking
for awhile!

Let me see what I can dig up on the pocket secretary and availible
permutations. I had a writeup for the Sony Sarariman VII wrist secretary
at one point...

That would be cool.

I've got a few ideas for some new paranormal critters. None of them
is lethal, just something to add flavor. Like the awakened manta ray
that dwarfs a blue whale. During mating season they flouresce at
night and can be seen from orbit.

NERPS has always been like that, though... And we're not specifically
looking for an adjective but probably one or more nouns and/or pronouns :)

I like Lost & Found better than Forgotten Treasures, BTW.

Well, my view is that it's up to the author of any article you're
commenting on to use or disregard those comments; it's not my article so
I'm not going to add stuff to the text (except corrected spelling and
similar things).
For example, say that Bull and Tinner post their Cleveland article, and
David posts some decker comments for it. It's then up to Tinner or Bull to
add in those comments David's made and re-post their article to the list.

What about something like "The missing files"? It would ride the wave
of the current "Files"-mania :)

I have an idea for a NERPS book. Perhaps this could be the "lots of
small ideas" book, but I think it would be best separate from it.

Basically, I want the book to be about various finanical aspects of the
Shadowrun world. In particular, I'd like to see:

1. Articles about various markets in Shadowrun, how they operate in a
mega-corporate worls, their history, and how runners might find
themselves caught in the politics of the market. This would be the main
point of the book: bascially, providing economic conflicts into which
Shadowrunners can be injected (or at the very least, campaign color).
Some of the markets which seem ripe for intrique, infighting and what
not are:

a: Diamonds. (This is the one I want to write. DeBeers is already an
evil empire. I can't wait to play with them in 2057.)
b: Cattle and other meats (emu, et. al.)
c: Oversized furnature, houses, etc. for large metahumans.
d: Magical formulae.
e: Orichalcum
f: Soy/kelp foods
g: Nukes
h: Fusion power, particularly what it did to the market when introduced.

i: Fruit. (A luxury market, I'd imagine.)
j: Personal services. (One image of the future is that large groups of
untrained workers will find jobs serving trained workers. The idea is
that time is more of a commodity to the highly paid, trained class, so
they use money to effectively buy time buy having others do shopping,
laundry, etc. This happens already, but some say it will get much more
pervasive.)
k: Petrochemicals. Who controls the gas?
l: Wood. How scarce is it?
m: Shipping.
n: Education. Do corps own schools? How do they compete for the best and
brightest students?
o: A million others...

Basically, a number of unique plot threads can be generated be answering
these questions about a given market:
a: Who profits?
b: Who wants to profit?
c: Who loses?
d: What threatens the market?
e: Where is the main action?

2. A centralized system for -- or even an agreement on -- the prices of
corporate stock. How many nuyen is a share of Ares? This is one of the
three questions I expected to find in Corporate Shadowfiles that was not
answered. Idealy, any system for prices should be able deal with first,
second and third tier corps. Perhaps this could have a web-site spin off
that ran the system for various companies dynamically (allowing everyone
to be in the same market).

3. In explaining the markets in item 1 above, there will likely be a
need to describe some second or third tier corps. This book could act as
a catalog of such corps. Of particular interest would be who owns them,
who wants to own them, and how Shadowrunners might be employed for or
against them. Perhaps a Matrix map could be provided for the corp (or
part of it).

4. As a pipe dream, a list of public megacorpoate assets. That is, what
corps publicly own, even if it is just a list of names.

I suggest a working title of this book as "NERPS: Invisible Hands". I
would very much like to edit this book. I'd also like to write the
diamond market article.
