<snip most of the history, since I don't know enough to comment coherently

It would be 20, not 30 years. And when the game was written in 1988, and
published in 1989, Mandela was still in prison and it looked like apartheid
would be there to stay. A lot of variances from the real world happened in
the game world, starting at the point in time they were writing it, and it
seems wrong to me to completely rewrite the game's history because something
different happened in real life.

(>) Awakened rhinos aren't hard to find if they're hungry. Of course, by
that time, it's a little late to start looking for them....

(Sorry, but I prefer the current style of Shadowland comment; it's not as
easily dated, no pun intended.)

(>) The same reason Aztechnology goes anywhere: Raw, naked power. Raw, naked
greed. If they're in Somalia or Eritria, you can bet your last nuyen and
every bit of your life that went into earning it that there's some sort of
power to be gained, more than likely magical (though that last part is
subject to interpretation). There could be a major magical artifact, or the
fragging Azzies might just need more volunteers for some of their biogenics
experiments. The "humanitarian aid" dodge just happened to be conveniently
timed, and the Somalians had no way to actually turn the Azzies away.
The question, of course, becomes, "Which is it, power or greed?" I
don't have any answers. Yet.
