Subject: A couple of good points on the nanite plot

After thinking about it more, Jason is quite right about introducing the
nanite cyber to the SR world we Talk in. If it was me GMing, I'd probably
go for it, but that's just me. :) So I have no real problems not letting
anyone actually get a hold of the cyber that the nanites would create.
Besides, would any runner in his/her right mind voluntarily be a guenea(sp?)
pig for a new cyber that may not even work properly? Unless it was like
Collussus(who lost both legs and several internal organs in the TT independance
war with Salish-Shidhe), I seriously doubt it.

So some more stuff on the tech as I see it is in order.

The tech would be above and beyond Beta, another reason for it not to become
instant tech on the list, or tech at all. It is placed at a micro-cellular
level by nanites in a similar manner to the interface units described in
S-Tech. However, this envolves the entire body instead of just an interface.

The tech is _highly_ experimental. Anyone with it in them would a: not be
allowed out of the corps sight and b: suffer massive side effects. Yet another
reason to keep it off the net.

It requires the ability gengineer viruses and bacterial organisims(nanites)
into totally new organisms, much like Symbiotes or the nanites that they use
for S-Tech gene-tech of any kind. So any heavily biotech oriented corp(or one
with large biotech divisions) could be slightly involved. However, I really
want to limit who knows anything about it to only 2-3 corps, and none of the
really common ones like Shiawase, Aztechnology, MCT, Ares, etc. I have had
Wizard(my only character who currently knows about the tech) hiring nova-hot
deckers to destroy any mention of anthing similar to it for the last 10 years.

Because it would be built by nanites on such a small scale, it could only be
repaired by nanites. However, this does mean that if you were to implant the
nanites in the body of the cyber-recipient, it would have the ability to
repair itself. Yes, self-repairing cyberware.(No way anyone should get ahold
of this for a VERY long time...)

It has potential to also revolutionize other manufacturing techniques as well.
Cyberware is the primary use for this as I can see it, but you could
theoretically use properly "programmed" nanites to build not only electronics,
but "perfect" optical chips(no flames on "they are already perfect"
please),
super-alloys and polymers(construct them on a molecular or near molecular
level). Basically, if it is small and can be built, nanites with this tech
could build it. Obviously, larger operations where precision is not so vital
would have no need of this technology, and it would be cost prohibitive.
Theoretically, you could build an IBM mouse with nanites, but it would cost
so much more that it wouldn't be necessary.

Medically, you could use this nanite tech to not only make bioware, but to
enter the, say, liver, and alter it directly without. It also makes possible
the ability to fully replace various internal organs totally with mechanical
components. Now, why bother if you can clone the liver when that pesky APDS
burst splattered it? Well, you could theoretically replace it with an
artificial one that does it's work at least as well, although I am not a
biologist so the feasability of this may be totally off.

But the tech could theoretically do damn near anything you wanted it to.

Oh, one last note on this way too long post. The potential for abuse is
staggering. In NAN2 the adventure shows Red Masque and biological agents.
This could theoretically be the ultimate biological agent. One more thing to
think about.

Uh, I don't like the nanite idea. Pushes tech too far too fast in the SR
world.

That's just me, though.
