I've received several letters of concern about the meningitis outbreak
here in Mankato (must be a slow news day on CNN).

In the past 4 weeks, there have been about nine cases, mostly centered on
one of the high schools. Yesterday, another case was discovered here on
campus, and the MN Dept of Health decided to innoculate the whole damn
town (about 65,000 people).

No, i'm not dead. No the entire town isn't quarantined. No, this is
not shades of the upcoming movie _Outbreak_ or the miniseries _The Stand_
or even the classic _Andromeda Strain_. Just a few cases in a close cluster.

Now, stop sending me mail about it. We're fine :-)

"And now we go to Herman Snerd outside the Mankato Containment Zone."

"Well, Bob, the citizens of Mankato have responded favorably to the
US government quarentine of the city after the outbreak of the
a new form of meningitis released from labs at the University of
Mankato. This new form seems to be spread through direct, physical
contact with an infected individual.

"The Minnesota National Guard has dispersed these flyers in the city
warning the populace to stay in their homes.

"Behind me you can see the erection of the so-called Mankato
Containment Wall, an attempt to stem the spread of this new disease
to the rest of the country. Supply drops are being made into the
city, but all other contact with he city has been cut off.

"I'm Herman Snerd CCN news."

Scary, neh?
