Wanna hear something scarey? I was doing my monthly update of the cast
listing, and I had to divide one of the parts in half cuz it was getting
too big, so now we have FOUR parts. Next month I'll probably have to do
the other two (You have to cut it at around 60k, or some mailers will
choke on it).

You ever considered paring down the cast listing? The number of inactive
characters on that list is just staggering. If you cut out those belonging
to unsubscribed people and those who are dead and of no future consequence,
we could cut the list in half.

might be a good Idea - though some important ones will need to be left like
tommy harada and such (their par tof the history)

Also - the PART I din't come through correctly, it might have just been mine
sight, but I might not have. All I got was mailer info and Rob's .sig.

See, the cast listing ISN'T supposed to be active characters only, it's a
listing of the character that have appeared throughout the WHOLE
ShadowTalk storyline, from the day we went online through the present.
Thus if foobar appeared eight months ago, and somebody was reading the
logs, they could quickly check to see who FooBar was.

Besides, i don't ahve time to try to move 'inactive' characters to
another list.

That's not a problem now, but wait a few years and you'll have thousands
of characters on the list. You'll end up booming accounts of the new signed
up into overload.

Besides, if you don't have time to pare it down, make Doom do it :)

You honestly expect this thing to last that long? You have more faith
than I. I'm going to assume that sooner or later HEARN is going to get
gumpy and tell us to go away, and I'm looking at a contingency plan right
now (it involves my own machine running a simplified listserver . . . but
don't worry, this is a LONG way off).

> Besides, if you don't have time to pare it down, make Doom do it :)

I know that doom doesn't have the time either.

Once summer gets here, I may look at turing maintanence of the cast
listing over to someone else. Perhaps Doom (if he's willing) or perhaps
a 3rd administrator specifically for ShadowTalk (which Doom and I sorta
discussed a month ago, but set aside to see how things go with him
helping me now).

Perhaps one way to decrease the size of the cast listing would be to grep
it against the current subscibers, and those that are no longer
subscribed get moved to a second 'inactive' list, which is available
either via FTP or mail from somewhere/someone. Then if a person comes
back, the cast maintainer can move them back or something. Dunno. I'm
not worried right this moment.

Also, I am expecting to stop administrating much of the list starting this
summer. I'll set filter to plonk error messages and have Doom take care
of them, and I'll concentrate my efforts on greeting new subscribers and
on-list guidance. This is mostly in anticipation of the fact that I'm
getting not only a little burned out, but also that I may leave someday
and there must be someone to take over for me. Actually, I may not leave
mankato for another three years (grad school), but I'll be too busy to
keep up, very likely.
