The real beauty of vampires is not in their toe-to-toe combat potential: it's
in the prospect of group organization for various, subtler purposes. In short,
one more set of players behind the scenes (much like the Immortal Elves, which,
for better or for worse, are always going to at least exist in the background).

I agree. I was just responding to the "fear" aspect of AJ.
Warloc has been to Bug City.....after that nothing is scary.

As to the vampire thing. I run a sit-down Cyber Fang game based
in the Shadow Run world. Meaning I use the SR history but I use the
White Wolf Storyteller System. There is only one mortal, a Samuari that
drinks vamp blood for extra powers, and everyone else is "supernatural",
vampire, true magi, shapeshifters, etc.

It certainly makes for a different game. :-)

In case people didn't manage to catch on, I've actually got an organization of
Kindred as a sort of "NPC" corp on ShadowTK right now: my characters Jason
Tylor and Thelienista are mixed up with them (Thel in a "permanent" fashion;
I figured it was worth their saving her life after the Redmond Riots). This
stemmed out of a RL roleplaying campaign set in New York where Jason was a
new PC. The GM actually had Kindred in that setting (similar in structure
but not nearly so all-encompassing as VtM would have it =), and our party
managed to run across one of them in the process of trying to protect a
client. To make a long story short, Jason decided to start researching about
this vampire (who he managed to get on good terms with...), and that vampire's
_sire_ showed up and decided to try to get rid of him. It was a character of
Jeff Mach's and Jason, both magically active, against this one vampire (not
even all that powerful in absolute terms), and the way the GM handled it it was
the most terrifying RPG battle I've ever had. The vampire demolished a
Force 6 Earth elemental without even slowing down, and was _wrestling_ with a
Force 6 Fire elemental for upwards of a dozen rounds while fending off other
attacks from our side. We almost didn't make it. Anyway, the overall result
was that the local Prince was "amused" (so Jason was told via the original
vampire) and that the best thing was for everyone else involved to forget that
vampires existed.

My idea was that Jason actually went on to develop more of a rapport with
them (on the down-low of course) and that they were his primary sponsors
throughout college and grad school, in return for him coming and plying his
magical research (et. al.) for them when he graduated. Since the stuff I'm
currently thinking about is being run by the cell in Scotland, it hasn't
had much cause to touch on list events. I'll make sure to try to check in
if, and before, I get some inspiration that affects the story here. =)
