A question for the list.

Anthony G Guillotte <gguillotte@****.COM> has the problem that his Juno
account automatically attaches a signature file that he cannot turn off.

Are we prepared to allow this as a sole exception to the "no .sig files"
rule, or not?

Herm....

Anybody actually tried to reason with Juno? (Not that I think this has a
great chance of succeeding, but Anthony might try to sound really P.O.ed
that he has to put up with their stupid .sig, and they might tell him how
to take it off). If that is impossible, then I would feel more inclined
to let it go. But I guess that's because I find 99.5% of all .sigs
annoying to begin with.

Okay, and if that doesn't work, he can try my free e-mail/
webpage provider, crosswinds, at www.crosswinds.net . No
frequent crashes like geocities, and no stupid ad sig
because they're no profit.

I hate to be a bastard about it, but I'd say no. Can the Juno.com people be
earbashed about it? Lists are a fairly common thing, aren't they? Surely
the Juno suits can see how this is annoying for people the world over, and
thus be persuaded.

How could I do that? I don't have an ISP...

They've yet to reply, although they have been quite flexible with users
in the past with major changes, i.e. continuing Win3.1 support.

There's no way I can get there without WWW access, which I don't have.

It may just be that I don't have the preferance set to recieve copies of
my own message, but just in case no one received it (and since no one
seems to have commented on it) I will repeat my case.

There is no need to have an "email provider" to SEND email...only to
recieve it. Using [almost] any email program, you can specify which
machine will be used to send your email (an SMTP server), and as long as
you specify the appropriate addresses within your settings, no one will
ever have to be aware of the difference. This is easy to do, is in no way
"wrong", and seems like a very easy solution. If anyone needs help
setting it up, I'll be glad to help.

I'm sorry, I was unaware that Juno actually supplied the internet
connection - I thought it was a web or application based network
application, no more, no less.

If people really have a problem with signature files, and Juno won't
change their minds, I would be willing to forward files, after stripping
the signature.

Just goes to show; it ain't too hard to make a fool of yourself,
particularily if you don't read all your email before writing messages.

ciao

Juno sent a reply to its customer service - automated of course.

-----
We're sorry that you are experiencing difficulties using the Juno
software. Below, you will find a list of help documents which contain
all
-- or many -- of the words in your support request. Please check the
list
to see if you would like to receive any of these documents.
-----

Well, the rest of it was basically every help file Juno has, and none of
them were relevant to the subject. Then, it continued:

-----
If these documents have not helped you to successfully resolve the
problem
you are experiencing, you can receive live technical support by calling
900-555-JUNO [555-5866]. Please note that this call will cost
$1.95/minute.
You must be 18 years of age to use this service.

(Because Juno is a free service, it is particularly important that we
conserve resources for our core mission, which is providing free e-mail.
For the minority of our members who require human intervention to use
Juno, we make such assistance available, but we ask that those members
help cover the much higher cost of live technical support.)
-----

So much for earbashing on deaf ears... ah well.

LPHnS,

GG
