Message no. 1
From: Erik S Jameson <esj@***.UUG.ARIZONA.EDU>
Subject: Edge Runners
Date: Wed, 7 Dec 1994 12:34:48 -0700
I have just been given a warning by Mr. Rogers (no, not that one you
idiot) that my proposed Prime Runners/Edge Runners project might be
victim to rampant munchkinism, with players and NPCs being out of
control. A very valid fear, and one that I had not actually thought of.
But here is my response.

Anything NOT published in any of the FASA books will NOT be accepted,
with the exception of much of the NERPS books. So if your house rule
allows for Omega grade cyberwear, forget it.

I am involved in a very powerful group, so a whole lot of stuff will
still fly. After all, the point of this project is to show what a really
powerful shadowrunner can be like.

And last but not least, as the editor of the project, I reserve the right
to edit it in any way I chose. I will allow most anything to go, but if
you can't explain to me why Sammy the Samurai has a strength of 21, I
will CHOP it down to what appears to be logical. Any cuts like this will
not be made randomly or without reason, and I will make an effort to
contact the person who submitted the PC or NPC to discuss the matter.

Now, I have gotten about 5 responses, with about 10 characters. Plus the
stuff from my own group. I REALLY would like to get more submissions
from people. Remember, this is not just for your own favorite character,
but also for those important NPC (listen up GM's!) that keep your game
moving and supplied. As it stand now, I have about 20 individuals for
this project; I really would like to double that number.

ANd to make this message even longer, here is my wish list of people from
TK that I can remember off hand and would like to have submissions for:

Freddy Frypp
Christopher Tarlington (sp?) aka Dark Angel
Count von Doom (please?)
and possibly others like Nightmare, Blitzkrieg, Spirit of the Matrix, and
perhaps some others that have been around for ages.

Thanks in advance,

Erik, a.k.a. the Whistling Editor

hmm - I guess that I could send in Spirit at some point - of course I would
have to drag her out and get her up to date... hmmm - that would mean
eeewwwwwww...

she would be the best to write up. Doing anyone else could give away too many
fun and nasty secrets. Of course people might be rather dissapointed that I
will of course mention CRUSH many times in her write up, only to find that he
isn't in there :)

I KNOW!!!!!! I'll do TALKY!!!!!!

Heh heh heh. This should be amusing. and should give others loads and loads of
fun. heh heh.

Hmmm. I heard a mention of my characters in connection with this. Two
questions.

1) Which of my characters do you want?
(They are: *drum roll* Shadowfox, Doomsday, Scourge, Scarface, DragonEyes,
Doc. Rebecca Jones, FireWraith, HAMMER, and Nightmare)

2) What do you want from me? Game stats, or just plain descriptions, or
something else (or both and more)? For me they are character's first and then
a set of very loose stats that sort of prod me along in the right direction.

Mike

P.S. Brian, not sure what happened to Mark. Guess this weekend I will try my
hand at writing up what Mark envisioned.

P.P.S. Question to Administrators: Is it okay for me to finish up a story
that Mark was working on, but he has disappeared with the only copy of it? It
involves Mark and Brian Angliss. His e-mail account, I believe is no longer
current.

Congrats! I've got 14 more days (MY GOD! It's TWO WEEKS AWAY!) of my
bachelor's degree remaining. And then-- that's right, you guessed it.
I'm going to Graduate school (aka Indentured Serventude) for 4-5 years
and pick up a PhD in Chemistry. So I'll be around for a while longer. :-)

of you out there are VERY nasty...

Could anyone that has sent me characters (PCs and NPCs) via snail-mail
please send me a quick e-mail note to let me know? I know smoe people
were initially interested, but I haven't heard from you guys since. I
know a lot of you are pretty busy, but could I get a quick e-mail note

Thanks alot.

Having just taken a glance at 'Prime Runners' (haven't gotten it yet), I think
that 'Edge Runners' would best be a continual project/book.

Just a thought....

I don't know if Erik (aka the Whistler) has this list set to no mail, but
your comments should be directed to him. Yes, I agree "Edge Runners" should
be continually updated; but that is up to Erik to decide.

Well, not really. Some other poor schlep -- me, I suppose, since I'm
the one suggesting it -- could take on the semi-odious task. :P :) Of
course, I'm not quite so picky about staying 'within the lines' the way
Erik is; I'm not associating myself (in this way) with the Hearn lists,
so I can kinda call it 'a fan's book' and make it totally unofficial.

In either case, it'll give us poor sods who have too much to write about
a greater time-variable to work with than the end of the year.

*grin* Please, consider this an open invite, for anyone and everyone.....
But please note that I _will_ edit, to a certain extent, in order to put
everyone in the same format. Don't worry, it'll be your normal gross-looking
text format..... And I also edit for spelling. Rarely, for coherence. ;)

Oh, and one other thing -- make it more than just a boring collection of
statistics, neh? If you can, take a look at the actual 'Prime Runners'
suppliment, and try to come up with something as attractive. Tell me a
story about this Runner; you needn't tell me about every detail, and in
fact, if you do, I'll face myself with the dilemma of a) editing for clarity
and/or brevity, or b) returning the character to you for some.... 'coherence
work'. To use an (in)famous clash of persons, 'Action Jackson earned the
eternal enmity of InterPol during a run on *location*.' Much better than
telling us about the whole run.....

Err, Mr. Wyrm, I'm already doing what you propose. Edge Runners follows
rather closely the Prime Runners format. In fact, volume one (if there
are more) is actually a corporate dossier on a group of possible
employees (read, shadowrunners), and includes history, and possible
appropriate uses for those runners, in addition to stats.

Whistler --

I realise that you are, indeed, doing as I propose -- to a certain extent.
You do, however, have certain restrictions on what one can have within one's
character, in regards to cyberware, grades of, and that sort of thing. I,
on the other hand, have no such compunctions, as I am not trying to tie what
I hope to be given into the Shadowtk/rn/Plot-D lists or its owners or manage-
ment. What I'm intending is simply a 'hey, here's my fave char, as I have
him/her/it written up right now and as played in my game' type of thing.

Oh, okay Mr. Wyrm. What I might suggest though is to wait until I get my
project, "Edge Runners: A Corporate Guide to the Shadows", finished, so
you can see what I have done. Some of the characters might seem to some
as munchkinous (one NPC has delta grade cyber), but all are within the
rules or the novels. And some are clear favorites of their creators.

No, I'm not saying don't do it. It might be kinda cool. What I am
saying is that it might be prudent for you to wait until I get my product
out. Then you can see what you like, don't like, and you'll know better
what it is you want to achieve with your project.

Argh. My format editing did leave out Johnny Rotten's strength. It
doesn't really matter, and you'll all see it pretty soon.

More importantly, I wasn't allowed to send my two messages to shadowRN.
The listserver didn't like the fact I'm not currently subscribed. So, if
it hasn't been done already, could someone please forward those two
messages over to RN? I would greatly appreciate it.

Okay, the deadline has passed, and no new submissions. So we are closed,
and the final product should be in its last stages of production
(editing) this weekend.

Over the holiday break someone (I don't recall who) siad that maybe this
should be a semi-regular thing. So I remain open to submissions for the
next installment. As soon as I reach enough characters, it will be
published.

I will be contacting all of those that submitted characters privately
shortly, with a couple of important questions.

Actually Irish fits in pretty well, power-wise. The only strange thing
about him is that he seems to be rather normal, at least compared with

Okay, here is (almost) the good news some of you have been waiting for.
I am about 99% done with Edge Runners, and I will have my friends and
editors go over my final copy tonight. With luck, and a favorable
schedule (the first round of midtermsis hitting), I should have it sent
to the right people within the week.

All right, thanks for hte response. A couple of things though.

1) It will be uploaded, under the NERPS banner, to several sites. I hope
to have it on Paolo's "Shadowrun on the Net", J.D. Falk's site, and our
Fearless Leader is more than welcome to have it on his site if he wishes.

2) If you require a hard copy, I need to know a couple of things:

A) If you require a printed hardcopy (I will prolly have to
charge for that :-()
B) If you would prefer disc, let me know which format. I work
on a Mac running Microsoft Word 5.0, but I think I can get it converted
to PC equivalent.
C) And of course, your snail mail address.

I will need this info from EVERYONE who has requested a copy.

Mucho thanks to all of those that submitted characters. As I say in my
Editor's Notes, some of you people are a little strange...;-)

Two comments.

1. You have really shitty taste in names. DarkLord? C'mon.

2. BILLIONAIRES? What the fuck?

So much for the starving-shadowrunner aspect.

Tarkis' Parents are from the north, and own a huge coorporation. They
can easly be billionares, and as for DarkLord, stop critiszing me.
Tarkis' parents are not aware that Tarkis is a runner also.

They own a huge corporation. Backgrounds? If they're rich enough to "easly
be billionares" then I don't think this is any small-time operation. Perhaps
I could refer you to the recent veto of Maxim Arms becoming an AAA Megacorp?

Their being billionares defeats the entire genre of the list. I refer you to
the opening chapters of William Gibson's (excellent) book, Neuromancer, in
addition to a good handful of SR books. If you read William Gibson, though,
I think you'll start to grasp the entire scheme of the list a bit better.

Possible, I suppose, but I don't think this is exceptionally in keeping with
genre --

Hey when i sent in Tarkis' background, I mentioned that Tarkis' parents
were extremly rich, and that Tarkis' was ashamed of being a snob, thats
why he ran. At that time, none of the admin said anything against it.
Also we have plenty of billionares now days, so I think there is allowed
some in the future also. If you want, i'll make uf a coorporation that
Tarkis' parents run. Plus they only have a little over 1 bil in the
first place. And until they find out that DarkLord is stealing money
from them, they might have less. SO keep trying to bring the questions in.

Has a copy of Edge Runners ever made it out to any FTP (or
anywhere I can retrieve it, really) site?
