Prologue:

The Aggie Komoedianten and German Drama 334 produced their semester
performance this evening. Feeling significantly drained from the
performance itself and the frenzied clean-up operations which ensued just
following the production, I staggered back to my abode.

I sit here, yet in my costume and stage make-up, reading various
posts regarding an Oscaresque awards ceremony for ShadowTalk. Well, as I
am still feeling somewhat theatrical, I shall lend my two reichsthalers:

Act I:

If such an endeavor is to be undertaken, then what must necessarily
transpire should be some approximation of the following:

1. Categories for awards should be agreed upon.

My own suggestions:

Best Picture ( Plot )

Best Actor in a Leading Role }
Best Actress in a Leading Role } Assumed to be protagonists
Best Actor in a Supporting Role } of sorts.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role }

( Gender designations to allow for more awards, not due to sexism. )

Best Villain

Best Director (based off of organization of a plot-line)
Best Writer (based off of prose, not necessarily a plot-organizer)

Or we could get slightly more specific in this regard, such as Best Dramatic
Prose, Best Characterization, Best Humorous Prose, Best Silly Prose, Best
Descriptive Prose, Best Verbose Prose -- all of which would result in a
significantly greater number of prizes to be distributed, a most desireable
situation.

Also, there could be a small number of "Special Achievement" awards to
supplement or in lieu of the earlier possible prizes.

Perhaps we could even include the slightly less-prestigious prizes, although
unless presented and RECEIVED in a spirit of goodwill, this could result in
individual's feelings becoming somewhat damaged.

2. Nominations for the various categories must be collected.

In line with this, criteria must be decided upon regarding what shall
constitute sufficient support for becoming a "nominee". Shall the top
five be selected? The top six? Perhaps everyone receiving X amount
of nominations? What?

3. Once the nominees have been determined, the finalists shall be
announced publicly. Then the voting may begin. Once voting is
completed, the winners shall be determined by tally.

Perhaps even an amusing write-up could be scripted spoofing the
awards ceremony.

Epilogue:

For steps 2 and 3, I suggest myself for the collection and tallying of votes,
as I already have several thoughts as to its organization. As to the scripting
of an awards ceremony; although I would very much enjoy lending assistance, I
speculate I would be unable to shoulder the burden alone.

Thoughts?

As fun as an awards ceremony would be (and as ego-boosting as it's
been seeing my story & characters get mentioned--yay!) There is one
major problem with doing such an event:
The new folks (lr or newer, that is) won't be able to judge the
older stuff. Unlesss they download the logs......Hmmmm, I guess
that isn't too unrealistic. Never having downloaded them myself, I
don't know how difficult it is, or if it's something everyone takes the
time to do.
However, since I never have, it's realistic to believe that there
are others who haven't. What about them?

Tough toodles.

The logs are very east to get. Explicit insturctions in the FAQ explain
how to get them, including the edited logs that are available via FTP at
TWO sites.

The only trouble with the past logs (even the edited ones) is that they are
BIG... they take up a lot of space. Since I joined the list (back in January)
I've been downloading and printing up hardcopy of the edited logs. Fortunately
I have unlimited text printing, but even in the format I print it in (four
pages of material per sheet of paper -- 2 on each side) I have already filled
two 3-ring binders, and I'm only up to the beginnings of MONICA II.

I think it is a great idea, but the scope of even skimming that stuff is
immense. We're talking hundreds of pages.

Anyway, since I've jumped in here, I will add my own "nominations" for
awards...

Most Sudden Rivalry Between Characters: Coyote and Dante
Silliest reason for blown run: Talky screaming about toast
Plot whose ending was totally different from the creator's original intent:
The Genetek Run

I'd nominate a couple of others, but my brain is mush right now (just pulled
an all nighter). I'll be around though. :-)

Not to complain or anything, but just to bring a pointor two of info:

We are all mostly students, neh? And Rob has already released the
stats on the logs... well over 2200 pages? I really don't have the time
to read that much (it's more than The complete works of Shakespeare and A.
Conan Doyle combined, and then some, I'm sure), and I'm only enrolled in
one class. While it may be possible to get and read all the logs, it is
unreasonable to think that anyone will be able to read all the logs. A
pointer or three as to where (what weeks) to find the best stuff might be
in order.

Just what I think, (though I'd rather think it than type it).

I don't know about the difficulty or not of down loading them, but when I got
onto these lists, and was planning the introduction of DeDannan, etc. I
ploughed through the last month of ShadowTK, plus the last two weeks of Plot-D,
using Mosaic to read the archives, and let me tell you, it wasn't something
you'd do during your lunchbreak... If I wasn't on vac, I'd not have done it,
coz there's a hell of a lot on those logs.

I'd say that if the new people (like myself) can't judge stuff that happened a
few months ago, then they shouldn't bother voting. I wouldn't, anyway.

Oh, Rob, I love it when you talk dirty.....

Remember, you were the one bragging about how many pages the logs were.
A potential way around this, I realize, is to have an Award's Selection
Committee made up of those of us who have been around for a long time
decide what should be voted on. Or break it into time zones, with
people chosen to judge based on how long they've been around.
This is if we REALLY want to to do this......

Sorry it took so long for me to get back, but I've been KO'd by a nasty
cold for the last few days and haven't benn in the shape to type much of
anything.

Here's my suggestion:

Doom runs the awards show, including tallying.
As many categories as possible, including the 'Golden Raspberry!'
categories for the worst "whatever"

-------------------

Step one: Nominations
Once doom decides on subject for each of the awards, we get to make
nominations.

Each of us send in our top three nominations for each category.
1st on our lists gets three points
2nd gets two points
3rd gets one point

Step two: Voting
Once the nominations are in, Doom tallys then up, and the top six
vote-getters in each category become the candidates for that
category and each of use votes on ONE in each category. If less
than six are nominated, so be it.

Step three: Awards
Once the voting is done, awarts are presented in a manner of
Doom's descretion.

We shoudl get acceptance speeches from everyone ;-)

=========================

One thing we do need, though, is a cut-off date.

I might suggest December 31 of 1993. That will give everything prior to
that the ability to be in, and then next February we can hold a '2nd
annual' one for 1994.

Yes, that means that some recent plots won't be elegible (such as Talky
or BarneyRun), but it also gives us a good calendar cut-off for future
awards.
