So, given some future plotting that I am doing for something I am
starting to write up now, I find myself in need of a bit of ShadowRun
canon legal information. Someone with the LoneStar sourcebook or
Seattle sourcebook might be able to help me.

I am curious to know how prostitution is viewed / treated by the
"authorities" in 2060 Seattle. I have garnered that within certain
corporations there exist "hospitality workers" and that sort of thing,
but that is _within_ a corporation, and hence extra-terratorial. But in
Seattle propper, how is such a vice crime handled? Is it ignored? Do
they arrest people and fine them or even send them to jail? Is
prostitution legalized in some areas, as long as say, someone is
registered / has a licence?

If someone doesn't have the information, but are pretty sure they know
where I could find it, I may be able to dig it up, but I would prefer a
reply (public or private if you don't want to waste list bandwidth) from
someone who could look it up.

Just some remember things in no particular order

I seem to remember that its still illegal. And that its still as prosecuted
as its ever
been in large city with a big crime problem (ie - when they bother with it).

Gangs and Organized Crime run shows.

BTL and SimSense porn (and Spicey Cal hots) have taken away some of the market.

Well, the Department that handles it is the Department of Vice and
Morality. They deal with Prostitution, Rape, and Domestic abuse.
Like all divisions there are bad cops, and good cops, and the good
cops often seem to get personally involved and burned out.

There isn't much more at a glance in the LS Sourcebook. I can
keep digging if you want...

Also, if you read the novels, there's a small, brief mention of
prostitution in the newest novel (I didn't like the book too much, and
can't even seem to find the novel, but it deals with the Free lance
Wolf Shifter). Also, from other novels I've read, it seems to be
rather obvious in some parts of town, so I assume the places that
LS doesn't patrol that heavily has very obvious prostitution.

In the barrens anything is for sale especially if it has value.

Based upon what I've read in both fiction and sourcebooks (such as Lone Star
and Underworld), the treatment of prostitution hasn't changed much, at least
legally. It's still criminal, still prosecuted. But as today, unless it
gets blatant, someone gets hurt, or some government official gets wound up
about it, it tends to be ignored in favor of going after violent criminals.

Penalties are probably still fairly light, both for the prostitute and the
"john." Pimps are hit harder, but those guys also tend to have a lot more
going on that can be prosecuted than a "john" or most prostitutes.

As was mentioned, the majority of prostitution is controlled by one element
of organized crime or another. You still probably find unnaffiliated
streetwalkers, or those controlled by small time pimps, but they probably
aren't as prevelant as today. And as they tend to be today, they tend to be
the "cheap whores" that'll do for five bucks what an "escort" wouldn't
do for
less than $500.

And I'd also imagine they don't tend to be treated terribly well by most
cops. They know the "hookers" are going to go right back to the streets, so
it's a waste of paperwork for the cop. And they'd rather be fighting real
crime.

I do not have either the Lone Star or the Underworld source books but what I do
know is that sometimes in this day and age some cops and some hookers sometimes
have a bit of a working proffesional relationship. Where the hooker acts as a
informent on things that will not get her pimp in trouble and the cop turns a
blind eye to what she does to make ends meet.
