Here's the story, lads and ladies:

Lady named Lydia is on the news recently, and Tuesday night on Nightline.
She's from Nigeria, and is about to be deported back. She supports her two
daughters with a janitorial position, and is now divorced from her husband,
a U.S. naturalized citizen, originally from Nigeria as well.

Story is this;
She divorces husband, because he allegedly raped her and assaulted her with
a screwdriver. He wants custody of the kids, she refuses. He turns her in
to Immigration in spite. Turns out she never filed the proper paperwork.
Oops.

Seems pretty mundane, eh?
Well, here's the worst part. She has filed charges against the deportation
because she has no interest in her children taking part in the tribal
ritual known as Female Circumcision, Clitordectomy, or just plain and
simple Female Genital Mutilation. This takes place at about four years of
age, and is performed on the street with an unsterile blade, much like a
razor. Lydia's girls are ages 4 and six, if I remember correctly (I wasn't
taking notes). Sometimes the girl's, er, um, aperture is sewn shut after
both clitoris and labia have been removed, leaving only a small hole for
blood and urine.

(I have even read of guys who are excited by the feeling of the tissue of
the vagina tearing during intercourse, and want the aperture as small as
possible.)

The gist is this: Dateline is doing some sort of a poll attempting to
harvest public opinion regarding Lydia's plight. If they get enough names,
they might even be able to do something about it. The best part of this is
that they have an internet address to send email to, in regards to this
issue. Think of this as a do-it-yourself-interest group. If you could
take the time to drop them a line, I (and others, surely) would appreciate
it.

To recap:
Lydia doesn't want to go to Nigeria - is requesting asylum.
Lydia's kids don't want to go to Nigeria and they know that they will be
operated on if they go. (They have even seen a vid-tape of it.)
Lydia's ex, lied twice on national coverage, wants the kids, and turned in
his wife (whom he married in Nigeria) for an immigration violation.
Lydia's family, home in Nigeria, wants to prosecute Lydia for breaking of
tribal law for not having the operation done to her girls, and want
her to come home so they can rectify the fact.
Lydia supports herself, without welfare or any fiscal dependancy, and her
children.
