What's all this nonsense then?? Ah, what terrible times are these, when
a bunch of knaves can say Ni! in an innocent listserver with impunity.
*Shakes head*

So, before someone brings up coconuts and temperate zones, I'd like to throw
in some comments regarding the events of this last month (Just read through
350 messages, didn't I?? I think I'm entitled!)

Censorship in the USA -

What is the real risk for Shadowtk?? I mean, as far as I see it, to be the
subject of censorship, there needs to be a complaint first, and since the
list is only distributed to members, the chance of this is very low.
Plus, except for the odd 'real life' swear word, the contents of the list
are rather tame (IMHO). Yes, I know your country is full of people who think
'The Beauty and the Beast' is Satan worship, but...

How many Anime fans are here? -

Me! Me,Me! (Shirow for ever!) :)

On that line, how many foreigners are there here?? (Meaning non-US)
I'm Irish meself.

The Nuke plot -

I have no problem at all with anything going on here, but maybe, just maybe,
people are over-reacting to it (I mean, the corps, etc...)

What I mean is, it's 2057, right? A-bombs have been around since the year
of dot. They are positively _stone age_ Sure, they can cause a lot of damage,
but I'm sure no one would bat an eyelid if I suddenly came up with a corp
that was in the forefront of genetic engineering, right? And yet, with just one
strain of 'umble bacteria you could do a lot more damage than with 20 A-bombs.

IMHO, at least....

As for the wraith hunt finale... wow. Weren't they doing that as a public
service, kinda 'hooding'?? They definitely didn't give much of a damn about
civilian casualties... (Reminded me of 'The Dirty Pair' - 'It wasn't OUR
fault!')

As for my characters...

Mark, has Gryffin done that attack on SF yet?? Was the execution of magistrate
Yamagata it?? I'd appreciate it if Goku was counted as having cooperated there.
He's a character that desperately needs some connections...

Hmm... tha's all really....

Not all that innocent, if its recent misbehavior is any indication. =)

*ahem* That's actually one of the more touchy issues. As I contended in one
of my long-winded posts, I view the other corps as under-reacting. But,
since I'm not the only one here and since certain plot events happened before
I signed on, I'm prepared to go with it to the extent that Maxim will
receive its comeuppance soon.

Not quite. Genetic engineering can be used for a lot of different purposes,
for creating plagues as well as creating bioroids and God-knows what else.
But remember that no corp would want to seriously research a plague except to
find a cure. Above all else, the coprs want to make money, which requires a
stable population base that is capable of paying for its products. The
LAST thing any corp wants is to precipitate large-scale loss of life. Atomic
weapons are _only_ good for this latter purpose, and therefore the corps would
want the minimum number of nukes around possible. Once the Eight have reached
their ascendency, any other corp trying to develop nukes would be seen as
wanting to _use_ those nukes, which is impermissible in the extreme.

Well, it started out as public service, yes. The problem was that the Wraith
broke free and started causing casualties, and then the other Free Spirit
showed up to kill the wraith for its own reasons, and _it_ didn't care a fig
about collateral damage. =) I don't want to see any more nasties of this
magnitude again, but if they appear, they're the proper province for the
military, not for the "Shadowfolk".

True (don't do it though... I am. =) but the nuke thing isn't in a
vacuum. The Big8 is a corporate entity and they don't like competition.
Maxim is being eliminated for to cut down on the comp. as well as to make
an example...

Well, probably people would construct the devices (under close scrutiny) when
the need arose. =) The more extreme case is a very small yield device built
into an important biotech lab to sterilize it should something go wrong. To
my way of thinking, the number of these outside the military should be less
than half a dozen total. And probably a like number in the military.

Of course a Corp could develop a deadly virus.. and a cure for it. Then
release the virus.. let it run for a bit.. then be a savior and come out
with the cure for it.. avalible for only $19.95 a shot....

Just my two bits...

Yeah right... And run the risk of being found out by another corp? Think
of all the crap they'd go through then. Even without government control,
they'd be economically dead. Would _you_ buy anything from a corp who had
just made a concerted effort to take a fair sized chunk out of the human
race?

Ah, evil. More than a tad risky in the Shadowrun world view, though, since
the other corps would have every reason to be suspicious of a cure that is
too precipitous. Also, given the residual level of medical technology, a
truly effective plague would almost have to be specifically bioengineered.
Also, lots of the employees of the club would probably get hosed. Heck,
there's even the chance that someone could beat you to the cure. =)

It could happen, but the risk would be pretty dreadful, and if you were
found out...

Agreed. Also, all those weapons and all that weapons-grade material around
right now? After all the upheavals of Shadowrun history, can all the Pu-239
and U-235 be accounted for to the ton, let alone kilogram? Once you have
the material, A-bombs - even H-bombs - are university science at most. Read
Tom Clancy's _The Sum Of All Fears_ for a good take on building a 100kT
device covertly.

I think that possession of nuclear weapons is universal already among the
Big Eight, and a lot of smaller corporations have at least a couple. Insurance
against the Omega Order, the last-ditch weapon when there's little for them
to lose. Like firearms where I live, proving possession is one thing. Actually
using one is another. The mistake Magnus made may have been to test one:
'don't ask, don't tell' falls down when someone's setting off nuclear
firecrackers.

But that's just my opinion. Who asked for it anyway?

I was at GenCon, and hence away from my computer. But I'm back! :P

Out there - yup.
Time on my hands - nope, unfortunately. I am quite happy I
managed to leave the threats, err, threads my characters were
involved in silently by now, w/o too much trouble for anyone involved
(I hope :-)

With an average of 4 hours spare time a day I will _not_ start a new
storyline or pick up an old one... Well, six weeks to go...

Actually, I've been lurking since Monday. (Went away for a few days.)

Right now, I'm trying to come up with some details on the
who/why/what/etc for both Ratspeak and Death (and crew). The harder
one is Ratspeak actually because the recent turmoil in events at SIGA
would be a great thing to draw the rodents attention and commentary on.
I would go so far as to say, the rodent must have been up to something
grand to miss out on something like that.

In matter of fact if Scourge were more given to idle gossip, he would
comment on it.

Later,
Mike

You had a cable modem!!! I'd give my left nut for one. The speeds are
incredible but so is the price, at least it is in Winnipeg, Canada.
($50.00/month for cable modem access)
