[This is cross-posted, both to plotd (it's important enough that I think
it deserves public airing) and private (in case John U doesn't read
PlotD, which he really ought to).]

Okay John, it's pretty obvious you are new because your formatting is
all over the map (read as: pretty far off the "standard" that is in use
here and not even self-consistent). So, I'll try to go easy and not
bite your head off. And if it was just formatting that caused your
message to rub me the wrong way, I probably woundn't even speak up. We
have "Nice guy" and "Not so nice guy" Dread Executors to take care of
such things: warnings, constructive critisism, baseball bats for chronic
violators of mailing list rules, etc. But in the above post, you also
violate one of the top "Thou Shalt Not"s of ShadowTalk.

"Private" messages are just that. Rather than waste ten pages of
obfuscations, re-routes, encryptions, and whatnot to describe how secret
a message is, we just leave it as: *****PRIVATE: <name> to indicate that
a message has been sent to <name> in such a way that it is not to be
intercepted by anyone else unless with _specific_ permission of the
writers involved, and not without a _serious_ reason why the interceptor
would be able to access and decrypt the message. (Nota bene: Private
messages are directed to specific recipients [one or more]. Leaving the
recipient blank makes it meaningless.)

Since you didn't ask me (writer for Quicksilver), and I doubt you asked
Paul (writer for Tally), Cerberus could not have known what they said to
each other over private messages. Therefore Cerberus's reply
_did_not_happen_. Clear? This is the sort of thing that if you ignore
the rule a few more times innocently, or once, flagrantly, then you will
have the Executors asking you to leave the list. More importantly,
nobody's going to want to join you in your corner of the proverbial
"sandbox" that is the world of ShadowTalk, and nobody's going to want
you to join them in theirs.

Disclaimer

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away. The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
