I could be off on this one, but isn't Steel Rat a FASA character name?
(If I'm off on this one, I apologize, but I have a nagging feeling
about the name (like I've seen it before but it has been a while)....
I'm going to check the books tonight).

P.S. You have to be kidding me about the Merkavas, right? I mean, that
platform is nearly _seventy_ years old. You mean completely rebuilt
Merkavas built off the Mark V specs or some new design I just haven't
heard of that venerates the old name or something. Right?]<<<<<

Well, since I have been pouring through Fields of Fire and a plethora of
other Shadowrun sourcebooks lately to make sure I wasn't talking out my
behind regarding thunderbirds, I can say I did not come across a character
by the name of Steel Rat. The Stainless Steel Rat is the name of a SF
character (in a book series of the same name that I actually haven't
read). In FoF, there was a repeat poster by the name Steel Lynx that was
thoroughly P.O.ed that Winter systems stole his name for a combat rover
drone. I figure FASA is smart enough not to steal a copywrited name so I
think I am in the clear. I figured Desert Rat was too cliche and didn't
have the state of the art connotations.

Steel Lynx might be the name yer thinkin' of, but it's also the name
somebody uses in maintaining a web page about Shadowrun. Or at
least that's the other place I've seen "Stainless Steel Rat".

Harry Harrisson's Stainless Steel Rat is a sci-fi character.
He's the universe's greatest theif.
The books are IMO very dry and slow reading, but nontheless classic SF.

Good reading for SR theifly types.

Likely it was the web page. I also seem to think that someone was
posting with the name before (way back to the year I first joined),
but I cannot remember if it was the e-mail account or an actual
character they used on here as well. (And it might have been on
Shadowrn not shadowtk as well).

*shrug*

It was just one of those tripping off some bells saying, "Geez, that
is a familiar name."

Steel Lynx, a drone and a character (Fields of Fire).

Stainless Steel Rat, a.k.a. "Slippery" Jim DiGriz, a fictional character
by Harry Harrison.

I think Jeff's in the clear.

Stainless Steel Rat, from what I've heard, was a regular poster over on
Shadowrn a while back, during the JD Falk era (Before my time, I'm
afraid)... He also posts to the Cyberpunk/SR newsgroup fairly regularly...

So it might have been Srn you saw it on...:)

I know of the StainlessSteelRat that posts on newsgroups; he was part of
the inspiration. Since there is nobody playing with the name in here, I
thought it would be okay. If anything, you can console yourself with the
fact that the character is temporary and won't be one of my frontline
characters.

Speaking of which...

You've got a registered character by the name of Quicksilver. Is she ever
going to be used? Or was she a long while ago and I just missed it? If
possible, I'd like to use the nick for a semi-bad guy that I want to throw
on the list (no, no Thunda's or Swords of God or any other drek like that).

And this reminds me of another thing. Is there anyway that old, not used
any more characters could be removed from the cast listing? That way, some
nicks could be reused. Just a thought.

Hey, Jeff ... I've got no problem with you using it, I was merely
trying to figure out why it seemed so familiar.
