So, when you say Otaku, are we talking about full Deep Resonance here? Or
just a kid with a datajack since far too early an age (and some interesting
psychological stuff as a result)? =)

well the full deal is what i would prefer, but it is not up to me if it is
ok in this forum. One side of the argument will put it in the same area as
the rather vigorous free spirit debate we recently had, others (like me)
see it as no more bizzare than magic, and not all that balance tipping.

I am happy to play it either way, even a kid who has been in trodes nets since
infantcy and datajacked since 10 would be a messed up puppy. I see a character
that has met perhaps a handful of people in the flesh in his entire life. just
the doctors and scientist who came to help him plug in each day. The deep
resonance kid would be a bit more screwed up even, but either would be fun.

I just wanna play a disturbed and vulnerable kid decker who has just realised
that he has been somebodys lab experiment all his life and does not appreaciate
it at all. The real world to him is virtual and only limited by his imagination
so if he does bail on the corp he will suddenly have to deal with the physical
world. pretty scary i would imagine.

Well. There was a little debate a bit back on rec.games.frp.cyber about
exactly how the Otaku _do_ what they do. The fact that they _do_ have
datajacks lessens the worry about electrical incompatibility between the net
and the brain, but there was still the question of how the Otaku take
MatrixCode and make any sense of it. I arrived at what I thought was a
reasonable explanation based on the quote in VR 2.0 p144 that says:
"Those who experience the so-called Deep Resonance become capable of
interacting with cyberspace using only an implanted digitial/neural ASIST
converter and their bare brains." I claim that this "digital/neural ASIST
converter" is something different than a "datajack" per se, and is
effectively
a Level 0 cranial cyberdeck: no processing power, but does the user interface
conversion for you. Given that, I have no particular problem with the brain
being used in slightly unconventional ways to run the whole Constructs
business.

In short, I am prepared to allow Otaku since, by the rules, they aren't
actually overpowerful and can form interesting character concepts. I just
would like to see their number on this list remain _very_ small. =) Also,
I do not believe they're in any way magic. =)
