Omae, you really know how to make things difficult. Being a
student of ocean engineering, the field which covers almost all the stuff
which so recently been discussed about the North Sea (except the toxics
<g>), I have the knowledge and the access to information which leads me
to believe that this run would be down right impossible.
If we want to keep TK as close to true (within the rules) it
would be incredibly difficult to make any sort of run in that depth.
Mixed-gas dives to that depth require amazing amounts of decompression,
and therefore makes it hard to getaway quick without some incredible
facilities. Also, movement is very difficult, firearms would not work
(as far as I know), and magic would be nearly impossible.
I really like the idea, but that's almost too Sea-Quest, and
although it may be possible that the tech has increased to that level by
'55, I don't remember reading it, and I don't think it could.
Anyway, this is all disregarding the natural fear which most
rational characters would feel about diving to 1000-1500 ft (that is,
BTW, between 30 to 45 atmospheres, 450-700psi, not taking into account
variances in water density, salinity, temperature, etc).
Just some thoughts, from the informed technical aspect.

1st Waiter: This is going to the President's Dining Room.
Man: Well then, I'm the President of Florida Tech.
2nd Waiter: You're Doctor Weaver?
Man: (smiling) Yes I am!

Student: First time managing a univerity, Doctor Weaver?
Man: (grinning) A university this small!
