From most of what I know - IBM basically started in Endicott NY

Way back when they weren't even IBM (I don't remember the name), They were
having loads of financial trouble. They had failed to truly get there
operations going after three tries - things looked bad.

Then came along the Endicott Johnson Corperation - they made shoes and other
things - and had made LOADS of money off of the war and later Gov contracts
(like many big business back then)

Any way - EJ's help them get there operations going by loaning them capital,
probably getting them a contract or two, and they taught them the EJ's corperate
values - something thst EJ's was famous for. These values where basically
- the works are you family - you take care of them, do loads for them and they
will work well. Just how well this worked can be evidenced by the fact that the
two cities EJ's was based in were Endicott and Johnson City :)
Lets just say that they did a LOT for the community (made theatres, parks etc)
(infact johnson City still has its wooden carousel) IBM followed suit and was
able to get many Gov contracts and become the leader in the computer industry.
For their employess they created "The Homestead" a golf course and recreation
area for the employies. Besides that they had great medical and retirement
plans.

Of course - all of this happened during the era of big business where the corps
could afford to do this because of the Gov contracts.

So, as far as I know - the Endicott area was where IBM basically started, and
they have always had a VERY large presence there until recently (Many of the
Layoffs IBM has had have been in that area, lets just says that over 1000 people
moved, "Retired" or where layed off.

And if your wondering - yes thats the area where I grew up - my dad did work for
big Blue, and was able to retire instead of being layed off.
