How do we know it hasn't been done before?

Problem is, I don't think they'd be able to figure out how to do that. If
they have to research how to add the "spark of life" in addition to
everything else, they won't be able to get as far as I need them to get. I
suppose it's possible that they're doing something that causes the formation
of a spirit without realizing it... but I've already given them one fairly
hefty stroke of luck; I don't want to give them too many.

Although they *have* discovered that, at least in some cases, there is an
element of irreproducibility to the process... this might be related.
