Hortensia Otalvaro
HALFLING ILLUSIONIST ADEPT
BACKGROUND: Hortensia was born in Winnipeg, UCAS in 2032. Grew up pretty
normally, though her mother and father divorced messily when she was 12.
Until age 14, she lived with her mother, Maria Otalvaro. For the next six
years, she lived with her father, Xiaopeng Marcus Brown. Brown was an
E7 (Staff Sargeant) in the UCAS military. No distinguishing medals or
recognitions--just a grunt who advanced because he survived.
Otalvaro died in 2046 of heart failure. She was young, but had done
drugs in her youth--scarring the heart tissue. As a result, Hortensia
abhors all addictions and addicts (BTL, crack coke, alcohol, food,
anything).
Brown died in 2050 while on border security. UCAS reports blamed a team
of shadowrunners who penetrated an isolated outpost dealing with
TOP SECRET operations. However, so many details have been removed from the
official report that it is hard not to doubt anything that occurred within
it.
Contrary to most people's expected reaction, Hortensia joined the UCAS
Marines in 2051. She was a quiet, timid young woman who excelled in computer
science in high school. She never the most popular or the smartest or
the best... but consistently came close. She has developed a complex about
coming in 2nd place. Her normally even temper fades quickly on issues
related to this type of competition.
After a year behind a desk in the Marine Corps, Hortensia's latent magical
ability was discovered. Her magical aptitude marked her as a sorcerer
adept, but minor brain damage prevented her from manipulating any but
illusion spells. She believes this is a consequence of her mother's
drug use.
Hortensia is not amazingly beautiful, nor does her personality distinguish
her from other young women. Her superiors felt that her aptitude for
illusion-casting would combine well with her natural 'unnoticeability'.
She was trained in reconnaisance, tactical explosives, and basic combat
techniques for her preparation to join UCAS military special forces
recon team, headed by Cpt. Nelson "Stampede" Wilkerson. (Called "
Stampede for his surgically-created resemblance to a bull)
In the month prior to her joining Wilkerson's Recon team, Hortensia was
placed in intense intellectual rehabilitation (brainwashing). She believes
that her name is Rosha and that her life began with her involvement in the
military. This was done to make sure that she would be focused and totally
loyal to the Recon team.
Her first assignment was to penetrate Fuchi's NYC tower and plant a
virus in an accounting subprocessor. After sleeping with a low-level
accountant to get his passcode, Rosha completed her mission with ease.
Shortly thereafter, Fuchi's stock fell a record 175 points on the Exchange.
This was in 2053.
By 2055, Rosha had established herself as an integral and extremely
capable member of the Recon team. Though she had regained none of her
memories at that point, Rosha began to 'freelance' on the job. Instead of
just planting viruses, She would secure extra nuyen for herself or valuable
information for later sale. UCAS officials discovered her extracurricular
activities had been going on for over a year and decided she had become
an 'uncontrollable asset' which had to be 'disciplined.'
The Recon Team handled its own discipline and two members, Wilkerson
and a new edition named Hortz, were going to handle it. Strangely, Rosha's
memories began to return to her that night. But they were jumbled...
in her nightmares. When Hortz and Wilkerson entered Rosha's quarters to
'discipline' her, she mistook them for part of her nightmare. When the
dust settled, Wilkerson had lost his left eye, Hortz was dead, and Rosha
was gone.
Over the next two years, Rosha showed up in Atlanta, NYC, and Cal Free
State. In each case, she was contracted to eliminate information about
a person/or people that was in a corporate database. Mostly, SINless people
who carry guns or unregistered cyberdecks...
She leaves a signature virus in the penetrated system. It is adaptive to
any effort to purge it. So far only Fuchi has developed an experimental
anti-virus program and it only removed the program that she left in its
system four years ago--none since.
Rosha's current mental and memory state are very unstable, leaving her
vulnerable to fits of extreme rage, sadness, or glee... often at very
inappropriate times. She seems to have some friends on high however
b/c between her few (and highly profitable ) runs, she vanishes without
a trace.
It's rumored that she's in love with NYC Urban Brawl Rookie Bernard
"Bernie" Brengle. But others say that she's just using him for his cash
and that he's too stupid to realize he can get a much better looking
woman to rob him blind.
Very little is known about Rosha's computer skills, but one person has said
that she doesn't use a deck. Which raises some serious questions about that
person's credibility.
"Stampede" Wilkerson had vowed to track Rosha down and make her pay for
abandoning the UCAS SF Recon team, and he has gotten close twice (by his
own account). However, each time, "she slithered through his fingers like
the snake she is."
She was seen very recently in the Puyallap Barrens.

OK... that was really really long! Hope somebody actually takes a couple
minutes to read it. If not, my loss. anyway, PLEASE give me any comments
... I tried to power this character down. If you don't see how, I'd be
glad to explain it out. There are personality developments that could
definitely prove very interesting for yall to deal with.... give me
criticism.... just make sure it's constructive ....
