Ok, for one, your body will astral form will live one hour for each point of
essence. Most mages can only survive outside their bodies for 6 hours.
However, I don't see why, under special circumstances, this couldn't happen.
In our game, a mage NPC friend of oours was blown into litt;le tinybits
(ashes, actually) fighting a couple insect queens. About six months later,
he shows back up as a ghost. No granted, this is an unusual circumstance
and has no basis in SR, but he can use his magic, and at the moment is
pretty much similar to a free spirit.

In the above example, the mage in question was becoming desperately burnt
out. He is much more powerful now that uhe is free of hius old body.
Just my take on that, though...:)
