How about it's part of a week long festival thing, every night a meet "up"
there, until the equinox, at which time there'll be even more
rambunctiousness. People from all over north America, some from further
afield.

Sure, why not. And a host of mundane magophiles and magic groupies can join
them. Of course it might attract the attention of the anti-mage policlubs
and so on. A purely astral festival would be much safer, only the
sympathetic could get there.
