This is a response I got from FASA concerning ally spirits.

<<1/ Ally spirits, when taken on a run, do they count as part of the
spirit total? Can they be trashed to avoid all damage not directed to
the character with the spirit, as in Ambushed en Route?

No and no. They can only prevent damage to the Runner holding them.

This response suggests you could have up to four ally spirits on a
character with a +4/+8 bonus during a Shadowrun, neh? Or am I
reading it wrong?
Whadda you guys think

I'm pretty sure - but check with Loki - that we've received an answer
from FASA that counting the bonus from the Ally Spirit does count as
using it. This leads to some fudgy areas:

Suppose we've got Hawkwind, a 3/2 Shaman with Conjure-2. Give her an
Ally Spirit (+1/+2) and a Greater Elemental. Hawkwing activates the
Elemental on a Run and takes two AP damage; thankfully, she escapes the
run unharmed.

At the end of the turn, it seems that all bonuses end and all items are
deactivated (otherwise, only one activation needed for Drones/Spirits,
ever.) With the Ally Spirit gone, Hawkwind is suddenly.. dead.

The same approach can be applied to the Beretta (+2/+1) and several
other Gear items. So it seems that, like any other Gear, the bonus
applied from the Ally Spirit is "permanent". (A possible fix: Just as
you can only use one Weapon to gain a Threat bonus, so you can only use
one Ally?)

Personally, I'm all fine for the four-Allies-and-a-Shaman gig; it's a
five card combo, you're unlikely to keep the allies that long, and
Shamans are pretty weak to begin with (Wishbone and Pappy, two of the
Conjure-2 types, are 4/4's, iirc. Even at 8/12, they're quickly passed
over by Torgo and Squark, who start out at similar levels, before Gear.)

*Shrug* Like I said, we've heard both yes and no from FASA themselves.
Counting it as any other Gear item, rather than a Spirit, seems to make
the most sense to me.

Remember, that a "continual effect" bonus does not go away. So, while
Hawkwind has an Ally Spirit on here, she continuely, without tapped the
spirit gets +1/+2. She cannot choose not to use the Spirit (as far as I can
tell by FASA's awnser), and it takes up 1 'slot'. So she WOULDN'T die. You
do not have to USE items that give a continual. The Baretta situation IS
interesting, since you can switch weapons mid run (but they DON'T turn).
Hmmmm, that seems like a FASA question to me!

Here's what we have in our Game Q&A from Jim N. at FASA:

~!~!~!~!~!

Q. Since it doesn't have to be turned to use it, does the Ally spirit
count towards a Shaman's limit of spirits?

A. They still count because even though they don't turn, they ARE
used.

~!~!~!~!~!

So a Shaman with a conjure of 2 wanting to take the bonus for an ally
he has on him would only be able to turn and use one other spirit, or
take the bonus for a second ally.

You can't stack the bonuses for four allies on a single shaman unless
he has a Conjure of four.
