No, there is no instant before they get trashed. They take damage and die
both in the same instant.

The Talismonger card allows you to get spells from your deck and put them in
your hand, and if you have no spell in your deck to put in your hand, the
FASA FAQ says you trash the original spell.

Huh? What original spell?
I have no spell cards in my hand.
I want to use the Talismonger and hope I get a high enough
roll so I can search my deck for a spell.
Can I use the Talismonger in that case?

No, you can only use Talismonger if you are playing a spell on a runner
already.
