I thought that a Wanted was supposed to stay in play until it was either
successfully completed or a LOTI or Lucky Wabbit's Foot was played on it.

I don't remember the exact word on the card, but it says something like
"trash after an someone attempts an attack on the wanted runner". Read
the card again, but I'm sure that the card goes even if the wanted runner
is not dead. On the other hand, to have the rep points, the wanted
runner must be killed and you can still have the rep even if the
attacking runner is also dead.

Using GAQS or WGC withdraw the "attempt" to make an attack on the wanted
runner. That's why the card stays on the runner.

If I understand correctly how you play the card, it's like a walking rep
bank. Play that card on Swaaaaaark! and wait until the end of the game
to grab the last 10 rep points that you need to win the game. Okay, it's
not easy to kill Swaaaaaark! with one runner, but you need only 5 rep
points, puting that card on Ajax sure can do the job. In fact, yesterday
I tried this cheap shot at the end of the game, but my opponent had a
LOTI and was successful.

Hope it clears the smoke ...

The exact text is "...trash wanted afetr resolving combat..." therefore there
must be combat to trash wanted, if you GAQS the runner there is no combat and
wanted stays.

Exactly. The important point here is that resolving combat doesn't mean
the wanted runner has to die. If there is combat the card is trash,
whether or not someone dies.

Wanted is trashed after the first combat over it, whether the wanted
Runner was defeated or not.
