Subject: Q&A list and more confusion....
Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 15:07:36 -0700
I got a chance to read through the Q&A list that was pointed out on:
http://www.oakland.edu/~ddmccoll/sr/temp/faq.htm. I have a few
questions about it. Actually, and I hate to do this, but where's that
old horse ;-)

First off a simple one...

[Q. Are Chipjacks cumulative? Are Skillsofts cumulative? IIRC, they
aren't cumulative in SR, but my friends and I wonder if this matters
in the SRTCG. We have settled on a house rule of NO for the time
being, but an official response would be appreciated. Also, can
Skillsofts be removed or replaced? Are they more like chipped skills
or Skillwires?
A. Yes you can put multiple chipjacks on a Runner if you'd like. It's
OK to do it in the SRtcg. Skillsofts can be traded just like any other
gear.]

I trust they mean traded between runners and not traded like ammo for
a pistol. In the latter case I have mail from Skuzzy that contradicts
this. Just wondering...

The next two questions go together and I apologize for taking the
liberty of posting such a long quote, but I just want to make sure
that nothing is misrepresented from the Q&A list. My additional
comments and questions are below the quote.

[Q.
I was wondering if you could clear up something about timeing.
Below is three different post to the SRTCG mailing list. Could you
please comment on it.

First Message:
Ok. How does one use the Archie McDeven Card. It is a detective
card and at the bottom it says that for 3 nuyen, turn him to turn a
unturned runner. Ok, please explain. I am quite confused on how to use
him..

Second Message:
When you spend the 3¥ and turn him you can turn another players
runner. I have only played once, so I am guessing at this senario. You
can use this special trait of archies in on of the greatest ways. Lets
say that another player is going to attempt a run and his first group
of challenges is yours. You know that you put a challenge in there
that needs technical and you notice that the other player only has one
runner with technical. You pay the 3¥ and turn Archie and declare that
the other players runner with technical is turned also. Since only
unturned runners can go on a run you know that the other players
runners are going to have to face that challenge because they can no
longer as a group sleaze it. This brings up another question. Lets say
someone did the exact same thing to me, can I declare that my group of
shadowrunners is no longer going to attempt that run? If I could this
brings up another way to "bluff" the other players.

Third Message:
I don't think that SRTCG supports as complicated a timing system
as, say, Magic does. Once a player declares that he's going on a
shadowrun and turns his runners to do so, that's it. It's too late to
use Archie McDeven to prevent anyone from going. If you want to keep
(from your previous example) the person with technical from /not/
going, you need to pay 3 nuyen and turn Archie during your opponents
nuyen/card draw phase or some such. Therefore, you couldn't use
ARchie as a bluff like you described. Could the game flow like it
message two or in message three.

A. You've figured out how to use Archie MecDeven on your own. Both
message two and message three are correct. However, I'm not sure what
you mean when you say that Archie can't be used as a bluff--I'm afraid
that if you want an answer to taht one you'll have to re-phrase it.

Q. Slight timing question. According to the rulebook, if two
people want to play cards at the same time, the person whose turn it
is goes first. My friend has a decker, which I believe states "Turn to
steal 1 nuyen from your opponent, yadda yadda yadda". Anyways, during
my friends turn, he decides to go on a run (without this runner), and
I have just enough nuyen to play Green Apple Quickstep, and I declare
to play it. He then responds by turning his decker, and saying
"Alright, I will take one of your nuyen, you can no longer play the
card, and it is discards". Is this really what happens? We are REALLY
confused on this one. Can you respond or back up an action? Can cards
"fizzle" if you no longer can pay the cost?
A.
When you payed to deploy Green Apple Quicksteps, it beacme too late
for the Decker's Sticky Fingers program to "counter" it. The Decker
can't take Y you've already spent! ]

So now according to what is here everything is in an "as happens"
fashion. There is really no way to prevent something from happening
once it is done (with the exception of Luck of the Irish wrt special
cards). Also, preference is given to the person who's turn it is, and
since you can only make a run turing your turn (heaven forbid they
change that rule :-) ) see where I'm going with this one....

So how is it that GAQS will prevent me from making a sleaze if played
after the challenge is exposed? (quoted from an earlier message from
Loki today "Going by repsonses we've gotten from FASA you can use GAQS
after a challenge is revealed to get rid of a runner that is making
the sleaze requirements. I believe that's one of the primary origins
for GAQS.") If I'm reading everything mentioned above correctly since
it's my turn and I'm making the run once the challenge is exposed and
the sleazing requirements are known to be fulfilled, the challenge is
sleazed. Correct?

Otherwise GAQS goes against all other "timing" rules that the game is
trying to establish. Which means it REALLY IS a broken card and
REALLY screws up everything. Or is this what everyone has been
talking about already and I'm just figuring it out now??? I mean I
don't mind more complicated timing rules, I'd hate to see it become
like M:TG though. However, if they don't want it to be that bad then
I feel they have to keep things CONSISTANT. Which in my mind means
that GAQS CAN'T be used to remove a runner to prevent a team from
sleazing an already exposed challenge.

Of course the simple answer is, always check your next challenge and
use GAQS before it is exposed, thus aleviating all of these problems.
How many of us are really going to remember to do this though? I
doubt I will most of the time.

Just my opinion, I give 'em, you can take 'em or leave 'em :-)
Later!
Forrest
