(The actual text is: The first Spirit given to Shade is free.)

Mechanically speaking, you're correct, since both 'deploying' - playing
from your hand - and 'trading' are forms of 'giving' Spirits to Shade.
However, speaking from the spirit of the rules, it's fairly obvious that
its meant for the first Spirit deployed from your hand onto Shade is
free, since there are no cards that cost money to trade (and probably
will never be.)

Incidentally, I've always assumed Shade was female. Anyone want to
compile a "SRTCG Genders" list?

(Even more incidentally, in the Star Trek: The Next Generation card game
by Decipher, it *actually mattered* what sex a character was. But since
all were from a TV show, and the card art was actual photographs from
the series, it was fairly obvious. I was just waiting for them to
include the Horta navigator from the animated series as a character, le
sigh. That and the fifty-foot tall Spock (not kidding!) )
