I believe from playing SRTCG demos at gen Con that this is indeed the
correct way to play it, and this is how we've always played it here...

Basically what happens is once you activate the drones, they are basically
more runners... So rather than saying Roadrash is a 10/14, you say that
you now have three runners (assuming RR was alone), a 5/5, 5/5, and 0/4. I
say this because Roadrash can still only take 4 damage, and if something
(Like Fusion Gate) allows you to deal 4 points of damage directly to RR,
not only does he die, his drones go witrh him...

As you mentioned, Drones have a lot of power, same with Shamans and
Spirits... But they are limited in that the power is linked to (normally)
relatively weak characters...
