I think you answred your own question...If you have to turn Knuckles and Bulldog
van only protects unturned runners, when the damage is dealt the runner is
already turned, therefore no protection from the van.
Think of it like both runners are hanging inside the van, and when the mean
troll comes to smash the wanted runner, Knuckles steps out and breaks a few
bones :)
