Now the answer :)

This is sort of sticky ground on weither or not a runner uses gear
cards that are ment to be trashed. Does the holder of Bulldog van use
the van when it is trashed to go on another shadowrun? Does the runner
with the rapier use the bike when it is trashed to pull out, or enter a
shadowrun? Does the runner use the stimpatch when it is trashed to
heal? Some of these can be argued either way, but I believe that you
can only have one answer. It must be a yes or no. It really shouldn't
vary amoung the different cards. Other wise there will be alot of
justification time spent on why one card is allowed and the others to
not. This would be confusing and probably throw a lot of problems into
SRTCG relitivly easy game mechanincs.
Off hand my vote goes for YES the runner does use the gear cards,
even when that card is just trashed to use. This reasoning is because
certain cards like Squaaaaark become over powerful filters. Because it
would allow certain cards IE. Rapier to become too powerful. That and I
think it makes common sence. I'm holding an empty coke can. I trash it
at my local recycling center and gain 2 cents. I technacally used the
can to get the money. I wasn't just holding a can it suddenly
dissapeared and I found 2 cents in my pocket. I had to do something
with the can to generate the desired effect, thus using the gear.

Just my opinion
