Dylan slid his ID card into the maglock and pressed his eye
against the reader. He blinked as the light scanned his retina. There
was a buzz as the security system disengaged the locking mechanism.
Dylan pushed the door open with one hand, dragging his cleaning cart
through with the other. The door closed behind him with a solid thunk.
The laboratory was silent apart from the low hum of the computer
equipment. Dylan pulled a cloth from the cart and began polishing the
rows of displays mounted across the top of the control panel. Dylan
looked at the columns of numbers scrolling up the screen, then shook his
head.
"Does this drek actually mean anything?" he muttered.
Tap, tap, tappity, tappity, tap, tap, tap.
Dylan glanced around. "What the frag?"
Tappity, tappity, tappity, tap, tap, tappity, tappity, tap, tap,
tap.
Pushing the cart ahead of him, Dylan moved carefully
down the corridor that led out of the control room. "What the frag is
making that noise?" he mumbled to himself.
Tap, tappity, tappity, tap, tap, tap.
He rounded the corner and stopped abruptly. A glass window
stretched the length of the wall, revealing some sort of clinic.
Fluorescent lights bathed the room in a bluey-white glow.
Dylan's mouth dropped open in surprise. A seven-foot
tall troll was bouncing around the room, his feet a blur as he
tap-danced like a seasoned pro.
Tappity, tap, tap, tappity, tap, tappity, tap, tap.
"You must be new here," said a voice from the other end of the
corridor.
Dylan jumped and looked in the direction of the voice.
"What the hell is all that about?" he stammered.
A man in a white lab coat walked towards him. "Well, you must
have the clearance or you wouldn't be allowed in here. I'm Dr. Quentin,
and that's Gus. We've just installed a prototype move-by-wire system in
him. We're just putting the mods through their diagnostics."
"But, but, but... he's dancing!" stammered Dylan.
Quentin just laughed. "What can I say, I'm a fan of Fred Astaire
movies. Making Gus do that is more fun than watching him wander randomly
around the room."
"Where did he learn how to dance like that?"
"He doesn't even know it's happening. He's fast asleep right
now. The cyber system's doing it for him."
Dylan shook his head. "I don't believe I'm seeing this."
"Tell you what," said Quentin. "Come back tomorrow night. We're
taking Gus down to the pool for the Ester Williams sub-routine. That's a
sight that you just can't miss!"

I just read the SRFanFic FAQ and have only one question that remains
unanswered.

Is it okay to provide feedback on fiction posted to the list?

Short stuff, sure, but in depth critiques, those are probably best left to
going offlist. :)

Fair enough :)

Next question: What the heck is a Hamster Wrangler (or whatever Rat's
title is)?

<shrugs> It sounded cute. It went with "Keeper of the Rabid
Woodchuck." What can I say? :)
