Guys, I got an interesting letter from Jak Koke last night. Hopefully
this will get you all motivated. :)

====Doc,

I might be interested in writing one of the stories, provided the book
can be sold to fasa beforehand. This might be possible, but in general
Donna Ippolito (the novel editor) prefers novels to braided
anthologies.

In addition, there are a few things you should know: the novels are
80,000 words (no less, no more) This amount of space is set by Roc and
cannot be changed. It used to be 80-100K but now it's a firm 80k.
Anyhow, that might not be enough room for the number of stories you
want to include. Longer stories are better than shorter, so that means
the book should contain between six and eight pieces. I'm worried that
if you guys want to include mine plus Steve and Jon's that you'd have
to end up cutting one of yours which would lead to bad feelings.

Also, I'm not sure that Donna will want to edit a whole bunch of
writers with whom she's never worked. A way around this is to have me
or Jon or Steve serve as editor for the anthology. I'd be willing to do
that too, but whoever does that would have veto power over any of the
stories and also would have the authority to rewrite parts which might
need it. As a writer I know that sometimes this grates.

I guess, my main worry is that if you're doing this for fun, you can
afford to put all the stories in. Nobody gets left out and/or slighted.
If you're doing to be published then only the best stories (in the
opinion of the editor) make it in. Also, with regard to selling it to
fasa, the more stories from name writers (ie. me and Steve especially
(Jon hasn't published any novels)) the better it's chance of selling.
Think about it.

When you're ready to go to fasa, and you'd like my assistance, either
as a writer on the project or the editor, I'd need to see the material,
after which (provided I think it's good) I can try to pitch the whole
thing to Donna.

Good luck,

Okay, so what Jak's basically saying is, yes, we might have some
problems getting published, but if we impress him, he'd like to be in
and he'd help us sell the idea to FASA.

Is that cool, or what? :)

Anyway, what I want to do is set this up like a standard submission to
FASA. Their submission guidelines ask for a) one or two completed
chapters, b) outlines for the rest of the chapters and c) outlines of
the main characters. And probably a few other things, but nothing the
rest of you have to worry about - I think. :) I'll be checking sometime
today.

So what I need is at least two completed stories, DETAILED story
outlines from the rest of you (covering the main events of your
stories) and outlines of EVERYONE'S major characters. The faster we can
get this done, the better.

I have one thing I need to get out of the way (a thousand or two more
words to do - I'll have it done by the end of this weekend), then I'm
going to concentrate on my story. Can I get the rest of you to try to
do that too? Remember, AT LEAST a detailed story and character outline.
If you've already started writing, or you will be starting soon, let me
know.

C'mon, people, let's move! The sooner we get done, the better the
chances we have of being published!
