You join the military, you do what they want. Besides, the military
wouldn't have any problem with pressuring the mage in different ways
until they did it voluntarily.

] Problematic. Refer to the novel (Hunter scratches his head as he tries

There's your answer there...just don't refer to that novel!
Seriously though, flavour elements like that are something that vary
from author to author. If it ain't written in a Shadowrun book, the
authors have to make it up, and sometimes the results contradict.
If all else fails, why couldn't the choice have been voluntary? That
solves the problem.

Hell...CORPS don't tell mages what to do, no way the military is
either. Mages are a RARE and VALUABLE commodity. The reason mages seem so
eccentric in SR is because they are given a fair bit of lattitude due to
their valuable talents.

They do if they are in the military. Ares at least has a few combat mages
with cyber and a high initiate rating. A mage may just consider some cyber
too useful to be without.

That's point one. Point two is that covert ops and other special forces
work is voluntary (I believe). If you want in, you do what they tell
you to. The military doesn't make mages get cyber normally - but I'm
sure they'd have enough volunteers for special forces that they can
say, "Right, standard equipment includes cyber and bio, even for magickers."
