Why is SR the 6th world? i take it that it has something to do with the
Mayan calander?

Your right, it does have to do with the Mayan calander. The present day is
the Fifth World. Estimates put the coming of a new cycle of humanity on
December 24, 2011. This was to be the Mayan "Sixth World".

The historical thang from which Jordan Weisman got the idea for Shadowrun
is explained in the back of "Into the Shadows"

The Mayans (along with a few other Amerindian cultures, apparantly),
worked out a very accurate calendar. They made several predictions using
that calendar, including that a new era would dawn on the day that magic
came into the world in SR. They also said that the Earth had gone through
4 eras before, was in it's 5th, and so the next would be the 6th.

FASA probably adopted the Mayan prophesy because it's become very new-age
to believe in the Mayan prophesies. The reason for this is that a lot of
people can't believe a bunch of Central American "savages" could know
enough about mathematics to make an accurate calendar, when, at about the
same time, a monk in Europe made an arithmetic error putting the birth of
Christ nearly 4 years out, with a calendar that needs to be adjusted every
few decades, anyway. The same thinking has resulted in the popularity of
pyramids for meditation.

it's because they were up all night.

RE: Calanders, Mayans, and change.

This is gonna be a bit "out there" but There were at least three other
civilizations who had much the same thing happening and at much the same
time. The Egyptions, Old calender, The Chinese, Or at least a
civilization living near where Beijing curreently is. And the Mother
Goddess Worshippers of eastern Africa.

Lot of space for that idea to cover. And yes, Von D did come up with
this about 20 years ago, but he wasn't the first, nor the last to notice
this particular Oop Artifact - information. (Oop = Out of Place, doesn't
make sense by normal archeological reasoning)

Guess you'll all know somewhere between 2005 and 2015 or so. (Calendar
differences) I may not last that long. But I'm hoping to see it.

BTW, 1999 to 2013 or so ought to be real interesting for another reason.
Millenialism. Ie: xtianity, hindu, and muslim. Oughta be fun around then.
