Howdy Gang. <smile - wave> It's been some time since I left a wake on
the list (been busy at work). So I figured, I spit out some thoughts
for comment.

I found myself walking amongst the books of Powells Book store, in
Portland, yesterday and I happened upon an old Shadowrun novel:

Out of the Shadows (?)

It's an oversized collection of short stories by TommyD, Paul Hume,
Nyx etc. I seemed to have missed this book in my quest for The
Collection. <smile> But this simple collection of introductions for
characters we all know and love (or despise <g>) got me thinking.

The book is obviously the first SR Book. The first page is a one page
synopsis of the world 2050. The book stresses the Mayan link of SR
much more heavily than plugs for SR today.

The idea behind the little synopsis is to get you, the reader,
intrigued by the idea of cyber melded with magic.

As I read it, I began to laugh a tad. (Making it a trademarked Vael
giggle, but as it has been pointed out to me, by a person who knows
who they are: a giggle isn't manly, so.. I sniggle(T) now.)

Do you remember the first time you picked up SR1, turned the elegant
Elmore cover around to read: 'The year is 2050; The blending of
technology with human...' and quickly slapped your cash down?

It was intriguing, it was new. FASA couldn't go wrong. Everything
they threw our way, we loved. (Well, I did anyway.)

Then we started throwing in our ideas of how we felt the world of SR
should evolve. It needs to be this way, it needs to be that, I hate
this and I loathe that, but I do happen to like this little tid bit.

Now I'm not saying that consumer interaction and direction are wrong,
I'm simply saying: boy haven't we got picky? <grin>

I know I have. I'm sure that some you have as well.

FASA got the first edition out with out our help, and they did a
fantastic job. Bravo. (1st Edition rules had some problems, but I'm
talking about overall premise.)

This happens to so many things. Take a movie preview: you see the
trailer, and The Premise looks unique and inspiring. Then we watch
The Movie. This is were the problems arise. 'That was nothing like I
thought it was going to be.' 'Man, that movie was great!' 'What?! are
you nuts?'

Damn our human nature! <grin>

Don't you wish everything was always as simple as that first read
through?

I sure do.

Vael (Who's making himself out to be hypocritical (by his above
statements) because he's as guilty as many other people he knows for
bashing FASA's line decisions. <smile>)

Nope. Never deal with a Dragon was the first....
I think the one you're talking about came about fifth (ish)....

No, it's not. This was the FIRST Shadowrun book to be published. It was
an anthology of loosely connected stories by various authors, released
in trade paperback format. Later, it was released as a paperback in the
series [I think 7th], but a couple of the short stories from the
original were deleted, and replaced with different ones. [Why, I don't
know].

Wasn't the name of that (7th?) novel entitled Into the Shadows?
If that is the book that I am thinking of.

The ORIGINAL Into the Shadows collection was an oversized paperback, that
was a "braided anthology"
Every short story in the book tied together to culminate in the final tale.
This was published by FASA IIRC, well before the ROC novel deal.
It came out just about the same time as SRI

Later, as it was OOP, ROC optioned the book and reprinted it.
However the first chapter of the original run eventually became the
beginning of Never Deal with a Dragon.
They pulled that story from the second printing, and it was like the 5th or
so book done by ROC for FASA.

But it was set before them, as Haeslich is in it, and distinctly alive.

This is true. The first release of the Into the Shadows anthology was
a taller grey covered paperback that didn't quite fit right on a
bookshelf. (There was a chopper on the cover fighting with a dragon).
The first story was the prelude to the Never Deal with a Dragon novel.
It was later re-released in a size and cover that fit in with the rest
of the Shadowrun novels. The first story now deals with Mantis
spirits, from what I hear. I'd tell you the copyright of the first
release, but Rookie still has my copy on loan.

Which makes me wonder if the ORIGINAL ever actually came out on this side of
the pond.....

It did, I manage to pick up a copy at Eurogencon, and a friend managed to
snag one when it came out (allegedly signed by Jordan Weisman). Mind you I
guess they both could have been imports.

This is a bit divergent, but who says he's dead? I'd want to see the
body before i'd assume he's dead...... Especially of a dragon that's
going to just about bounce LMG rounds.

Well, yeah, I guess there is no _proof_ that he's dead, but either way,
'Into The Shadows' was set before the Sam Verner trilogy.
