I admit that the infomration currenlty posted on the FASA homepage is
somewhat limited. However, since it does include a few paragraphs of
teaser and an illustration or two as well as photos of the "Growler"
minatures, I thought I would ask what anyone else thinks of the game based
on this limited preview.

Personally, I was never much into hex maps and minatures so I don't think
I will care for either new game as much as I did the late and lamented
Earthdawn or Shadowrun, but to eahc his own. And it would be interesting
to see what other people thought about this small bit of info.

I'm still holding out for FASA to resurrect DMZ and start putting maps for
it in every published adventure. ;)

Do not hold your breath, my friend, or we might have to call the
ambulance on you. }:-) If you saw my hairy self jump out of the back of
an ambulance to save you you'd probably pass ot again.
This leads me to an amusing story that has nothing to do with
Shadowrun, but should elevate the general humor level of RN. This is a
true story.
Several years ago, here in Florida, a friend of mine (who I met
after this event) suffered a heart attack. He is a former biker,
musician, and general rebel, hair half-way down his back, big thick
beard, etc. The heart attacks had happened to him before so he started
taking his nitroglycern (or whatever) and his wife called the ambulance.
The ambulance service hadn't been in place in his area except for a few
months. When the ambulance arrived, a long-haired, bearded man jumped out
of the back. My friend yelled out, "Thank God, they sent a hippy!" The
EMT who jumped out of the back yelled back, "Don't thank him yet, I've
only been trained in shark bites and drowning, you're my first heart
attack."
To sum up the story, my friend lived, his EMT survived, and 20
years after the event, when they had their anniversary, my friend was
invited back to tell the story.

Well, the universe has potential, but as for the gameplay - I especially
like having the ability to design new races. If done right, it could
give a lot of flexibility and personality to the game.

Well, they're different sorts of games entirely. I think it's a
reasonable direction for FASA to try - they've done well in the "hex
map" arena (with both Battletech and Renegade Legion - although it
didn't sell too well, I liked it). They've done well in RPGs (SR),
they've done well in CCGs (BT again). They've even done well in
computer games (again with the BT franchise).

Why not try one of the few remaining genres?

Niether games mechanics struck me as unique from my (non
particapatory) previewing at GenCon- smooth running, reasonable
vercimilatude, fully aceptable. What pleased me was that the "universes"
made modling normal, realisitc confrontations possible; my general gripe
with almost all mini gmaes (all flovors of warhammer in particular) is
that they encourage use of "unique" characters and items in evry fight,
and don't allow for expericeed (or DIY unique) characters. Also, a
"balanced" fight is a rare thing (no good leader attacks an equal foe);
these games seemed to allow more leway in balance / reinforcements than
some.

"Planet of Meat" or whatever (does it have a publicly usable name
yet?) looked fun to me (I loved "Necrumunda"), but I doubt I could rustle
up a campaign. Most of the Mini's look worth getting- a couple growlers
could spice up ANY mini setup (I'm thinking of those few ED + Shadowrun
games we use mini's for). Crimson Skies is more role-playable; if you
like role-playing Battle tech, you could do crimson skies. It's
interesting they had computer images; it would make a rad simulator game.
