Let's say that i am a non magic person who wants to protect myself from
incoming spells. Other than praying or hiring some mage to provide spell
defense, what are my options?

One thought I had was to have a couple of spells anchored- Detect Spell
coupled with Spell Barrier. Very expensive though (money, karma, and
time spent rereading the anchoring rules wise). And you sort of have to
rule out the magical healing option if you wander around with that setup.

Any other bright ideas?

Also, I reccommend seeing "The Usual Suspects." It's a movie about a
messy shadowrun, except that the setting is now.

One problem... if you keep it up all the time, someone can pump a spell
into your anchor! And, being non-magical, you won't even know it's coming.
Keep it down, and you can be caught be a surprise attack.

Not to mention that if you've got a good guy mage on your team, you'll
really piss him/her off.

And finally... is there REALLY a spell called Detect Spell? And why doesn't
it go off on a) itself, and b) the Spell Barrier?

Well, you could wear that crazy costume in ShadowTech that creates that
'Predator' like effect. Being hard to see will increase the enemys target #.

That movie is totally well made, fine acting and the plot is to my
untutored eye, brilliant.
Perfect movie. I'd almost lost faith in American Filmindustry as a
promoter of acting instead of dumb special effects :-0

Just my ramblings, take no note whatever. For your own good.

You can always use a detect enemies spell as a trigger, that will allow
you to get healed and will make sure that the spell is up whenever someone
means you harm. You can also make sure you include some sort of manual
trigger, that should make it even more handy.

A detect enemies spell won't notice a mage casting spells from outside the
range of detection...

No I know its not perfect, but a Detect Enemies (extended ranged) can
cover some pretty rediculous ground if you get enough succeses. And anyway
how ofter to you get a LOS of more that 500m in a city anyway?
I know its not perfect, but its pretty damned good and its the only
solution that covers everything.
