It's boxes and yes, you can't try again until the character has been damaged
again. I've often suggested that if the healing doesn't go as well as you
would like, then why not cut yourself for a light wound and try again? :-)

I rarely ever do healing during combat. Most times you need your successes
for the nr of boxes to be healed to reduce a lot of damage. Also being the
only mage in the group means I'm required for other things...
Within our group, healing is done by first aid/bio tech to reduce the wound
level, then magical healing to wrap it up.
