I have a question here that might be slightly off topic, but it's really
been bugging me recently:

How do you pronounce FASA?

Do you guys say the letters, like you do in FBI, or do you say it, like
NASA? Has anyone who has talked to the developers at GenCon or
something head them say it?

It depends on who you talk to. The following would benefit from computers
using phonetic alphabets and both me and you knowing how those phonetic
letters are pronounced exactly, but I've basically heard two ways of
saying "FASA". One is with both A's as in "ah", the other is with the
first A as in "man" and the other as in "ah".

The easy way, I guess, is saying that you pronounce it just like "NASA"
except with an F at the beginning instead of an N.

I've always said it with 'a's as in 'man' - however, one of my
acquaintences pronounces it FAY-za. (Ugh.)

I usually give it a FAH-suh spin. I've also heard the 'a's pronounced like
the 'a' in 'fat'. (Tom Dowd perhaps? Probably not though).

True, however the minor problem there is that "NASA" is also pronounced
differently depending on who's saying it...

No. The original FASA was clearly intended to sound just like NASA, not a
like a star-truck gun.
Now, in the States, the acronym NASA has a pretty standard
pronounciation, much as Lady Jester put it. --Anders

I'm not sure about that ... I've always pronounced NASA (and heard it
pronounced) with an 'a' as in nap (Hi, John Glen ;). FASA, on the other
hand, I've always pronounced FA (as in the musical note) - SA (like
'Suh'). I don't recall any other pronouncations I've heard ...

I am sure about that... FASA stands for Freedonian Aeronautical and Space
Administration. NASA stands for...

(Freedonia: a country out of a Marx Brothers movie)

This is one reason that; when among people who don't know what FASA is or
does, I call it by it's full name, and not the abbreviation. :-)

As Robert posted a few minutes ago (which saved me having to spell it.. ;):
Freedonian Aeronautical and Space Administration. When you tell people that
they make games/books, you tend to get a puzzled response. :)

Doesn't that create more confusion? Or is that the intent? :)

... So? Why do two anacronyms that stand for similar things have to be
pronounced the same? I just told you how I always pronounced it and

By the way, if the anacronym was used, how was it pronounced in the Marx

Umm... because FASA is a pisstake of NASA, and as such should be pronounced
the same way? That's about the only excuse I can think of.

It wasn't used in the Marx Brothers movie... only the country (Freedonia,
for those that missed it) is mentioned there.

To the FASA reps, if you will... how do _you_ pronounce FASA?

Well, I am not a FASAn, but when the question came up on the boards here a
while back FASAInfo he said it was the same as NASA. How you pronounce NASA
may vary slightly, but oh well :-)

The movie in question, Duck Soup, predates NASA by a few decades. The
only thing the Marx Brothers were responsible for was inventing a
country called Freedonia. FASA was responsible for bringing that
country into the Space Age by deciding that it needed an Aeronautics
and Space Administration.

(Oddly enough, the Marx Brothers weren't the first to make a movie by
the title of Duck Soup. Laurel and Hardy had had a movie by that title
almost a decade previous. It had nothing to do with Freedonia,
however.)

Although I haven't seen the movie, it seems to me there is no such
organization in it. IIRC, NASA was founded sometime after WWII, while the
Marx Brothers made movies _before_ the war.

When you call FASA on the phone, thier automated recording says "You have
reached the ofices of FASA..."

It sounds like fas - uh (fas as in fast, uh as in duh)

Even before that, we always said it that way, and so did all our friends;
that is the midwest pronunciation of (x)asa

I'll try to put a recording of it on my website

Sheesh, Gurth- you were at GenCon, you should know. American
pronunciation, of course; like I said, it IS in the Midwest. For those
not native to America, note that a Midwestern "a" can be used to carve

Now that it has been mentioned...that's exactly how Tom Dowd pronounced it
when I heard it. (I'd forgotten exactly, but I've remembered now). FASA like
NASA.

(As an aside...the typically midwestern 'accent' is the model for nationwide
news broadcasters).
