Hi!

My Seattle-based group is currently playing in Germany. There they met
a great form earth elemental wich spoke to them. The question came up:
What language are elementals or spirits using? The universal astral
language? The language of the summoner? What if the summoner speaks
more than one language? Any idea?

Steffen

watchers, too. options:
1)Elementals would tend not to speak, Nature per locale. Airport spirits
would be a real help. Watchers targets lang (special case)

2)Caster's Language
3)Magic means you understand it if you speak any language, and they
understand yours.(I'd still say e's quiet, nature more 'talkative')

Maybe they speak like (great?) Dragons - right in your mind? Wouldn't
have to bother then...

I'd say you can understand an elemental or nature spirit no matter what
language you speak, but there are more possibilities, and until we get an
official answer from FASA I suggest you pick one you like best.

(Unfortunately I couldn't find any reference to spirit languages in a
quick check of Earthdawn's Magic sourcebook.)

My favourite answer to this question comes from the Bureau 13
setting. They rule that a spirit's communications are in the birth
language of the hearer. This leads to such interesting situations as
someone raised in French until the age of 3 or 4, then raised exclusively
in English. Can't speak French very well, but that's his birth
language......

I was under the impression that elementals couldn't speak (not bright
enough?), but nature spirits could. Mages who summoned elementals could only
order them around and perhaps had a vague mental link of some sort.

Any spirit over force 6 will more likely then not have a higher IQ then
the summoner. It could be said how ever that only air elementals (and
other elementals in great form) have the capability for speach.
